We’re ready with another developer’s release of WPML, which (properly) supports multilingual menus.
sitepress-multilingual-cms-1.8.0.RC1_1.zip
Now that it’s working, it’s also easy to use. To create menus in different languages, click on the language link to add translation to the menu.
There’s a menu per language, so you have the flexibility of including whatever you need for different languages. Of course, menus can contain the same items, but it’s up to you.
Here is a video by Mihai, showing multilingual menus in WordPress 3.0:
BTW: this is the first video by Mihai. If you want to see more how-to videos from him, some encouragement is in order!
Release Schedule for WPML 1.8.0
Everyone’s already waiting for multilingual menus, so we’re trying to push this as a public release ASAP. Give us your feedback. If it’s all clean, we’ll release this week.
I have tested this version in WP 3.0 clean installation. After the last step of wizard finished, I found an error message at the bottom of admin page:
“Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in E:\wamp\www\wordpress30\wp-content\plugins\sitepress-multilingual-cms\inc\wp-nav-menus\iclNavMenu.class.php on line 544″
This condition happened when WPML etiher in Basic and Advanced mode. When I click on Menu link in wp-admin (there is no any menu, yet), a warning message appeared:
“The current theme does not natively support menus, but you can use the “Custom Menu” widget to add any menus you create here to the theme’s sidebar.”
FYI, I am using Atahualpa theme version 3.5.1. I also have tried switching the theme to Twentyten, that error message still appear.
After I created a new menu in default language, that error message then disappear.
Hi Masino – thanks for this. That warning was showing when the theme option ‘nav_menu_locations’ was empty (before saving a menu). It’s fixed now.
Thanks and great. Can’t wait for the stable version.
Hey there…
So the Multilanguage-Menus are nice, but I can’t use them at all:
There is no way to define language-specific menu-titles…
I’ll all the other (non-multilingual-menu-) errors on your forum…
Tested in a dulicated instance of my current wordpress with an also duplicated database.
Installation and configuration without problems
We didn’t (yet) implement multilingual items. It’s a new level of complexity.
For now, there’s a different menu per language. So, you can enter items in each language menu and set the titles to whatever you like.
But not in the “Design > Widget > Individual Menu”-Area, there if have to define an Title whos shown to the menu…
And this isn’t multilangual :-/
I’am just another Idiot
Found it under WPML-Preferences…
So now i can start to translate my whole Blog, this will take a while, but guys: you’v done a great job! (out of the multilanguage-tag-problem reported in the forum)
I’am glad to start reaching the whole world with english posts!
Thanks for the feedback. Mihai found and fixed the bug with same-name tags. Have a look here:

the title of the “custom menu” widget is static and don’t change automatically for each language
