This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
How do I link pages to their existing translations?

Solution:
You can link pages to their translation using the "Connect with translations" feature. Please try the following steps:

1. Go the the Edit screen of the page

2. Click on "Connect with translations" in the "Language" widget on the right side

3. Search for the page you want to link, then select it and click "Ok"

4. If you wish to change the page original language, select "Make [Language] the original language for this page"

5. Click the "Assign" button

Bigul wrote THIS (https://wpml.org/forums/topic/how-do-i-link-pages-which-are-already-translated/) in a former post, for a previous version. I just updated my WPML licence and everything is absolutely-latest version on the site, but connecting existing (already translated) pages is a hellish adventure. WHERE can we do this?.. Right now, we are ending up with more and more duplicated pages, rather than connections between EXISTING pages. I am glad that Bigul is still around, maybe he can update his post, for everyone else trying to do this. Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML support!

I have checked what Bigul wrote - is there something not clear in his instructions, or are you not able to connect pages with translations?

I'm not sure what scenario are you having - are you creating duplicates, or? Because if you created duplicates, then they are already connected with translations. However, if you decide to connect this duplicates with some other pages perhaps, then you need to select "translate independently" when on these duplicates, disconnect them from translations and connected them with some other pages (see images).

Hi Bruno, Thanks for the feedback. The "Connect with translations" option wasn't showing up on all those edit pages, for some reason, only on some. Also, similarly, the "this page is a translation of" option doesn't show up everywhere either. Lastly, but not least, HOW do you keep the admin in a particular language (for instance, English) even when looking at the list of other-language pages? It's not (of course) because a site may also carry pages in Japanese, or Swahili, that the person managing the site necessarily wants to learn Japanese or whatever, to be able to run the admin... 🙂

I'm not sure now - they want me to check this issue directly on your site or did you resolve it? If yes, I have marked your next reply as private and you can provide me with credentials, along with information on which pages is this happening.

Please make a full backup of your site before sharing this info!

You can use plugins such as UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) or ask your host to perform a site backup.

As for your other question, can you tell me if this answers it?

https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/setting-the-wordpress-administration-language/

Specifically this part:

"In the WPML language settings section select the Set admin language as editing language check-box to dynamically change the WordPress administration language, according to the content’s language. This way, when you edit English content, the admin will be in English and arranged from left to right. When you edit Arabic content, the WordPress admin will show in Arabic and display from right to left."

Hi, Attached screenshot is a good example... There is NO "Connect with translations" option (upper red rectangle), and no amount of playing around with those little "recycle" symbols (lower red box) actually makes them go away. I emptied the cache a half-dozen times, and finally turned it off completely, and that seemed to fix things, more or less. Strange way to work, not knowing if the NEXT updates will throw all stability out of the window once again, as these last changes did. :-/ Now, regarding the last point, maybe I didn't express myself clearly. What I meant is this: I want the admin-side menu/options/terms/help/whatever language to stay in English, plain and simple, NO MATTER which content pages I am editing or in what language they happen to be. My visitors might speak German or French, so that content is for them, but it doesn't mean I should learn all the admin-side terms in German, or whatever. 🙂

Hi,

I recorded a video which hopefully explains both of your questions :). Can you have a look and let me know?

Hi Bruno, Firstly, many thanks for your kind help and for preparing that video. By the time I got your comments, I had dug around and found a similar solution, by deleting links and re-installing fresh ones. Unsettling thing (and strangely reminiscent of early Windows days) that a relatively expensive plug-in would rely on a delete-and-reinstall strategy, while aggressively developing forward into the future without ensuring that the basic underlying architecture is sound. Kudos to you for your dedication, however, and I hope I don't have to make my way here again the next time the theme or WP get an update... 😉 Feel free to close this thread (and delete it, if you wish).

Hi,

Issues do happen sometimes with updates, however the vast majority of our clients have no issues with updates, so I guess this could be characterised as a bad luck :(.

Marking this thread as resolved!

Hey same issue here.
I've been browsing through the Support pages, this seems to be a recurrent problem.
Maybe something to fix in the coming updates since it doesn't seem to be intuitibve for a LOT of people.

Hi @ruben,

Would you mind creating a new ticket, also passing Duplicator package so that we can investigate your site directly? That may help us find what is the culprit behind this and act with our developers accordingly.

Bruno Kos
