About Smartling

Smartling is a translation management platform and language services provider to localize content across devices and platforms. Author of Enterprise Translation Cloud, a data-driven approach to localization that helps customers achieve higher quality translation at a lower total cost.

Getting started with Smartling and WPML

To send content for translation to Smartling, install the following plugins on your website:

  • WPML Multilingual CMS – the core plugin
  • WPML String Translation – this plugin will allow you to translate interface strings

You can download them from your wpml.org account. If you do not have an account yet, you can create a new one by choosing WPML Multilingual CMS or Multilingual Agency plans.

Working with Smartling via WPML

Here are the basic steps of working with WPML and Smartling. For a full walkthrough, check out our page about using WPML with a translation service.

Connecting Your Website to Smartling

First, you need to connect WPML with Smartling. Part of this very simple process is to request your Smartling Account Tokens (User Identifier, User Secret, Account UID, and Project ID).

If you already have a Smartling account, simply enter your Account Tokens (User Identifier, User Secret, Account UID, and Project ID).

If you don’t have an account, go to Smartling and click the Schedule a meeting button.

A Smartling representative will contact you to set up your account.

When the account is ready, log in to your Smartling account and generate your Account Tokens from the API tab.

For further instructions on how to create Account Tokens, check the documentation provided by Smartling.

Sending content for translation

Once your site is connected to Smartling, you can start sending your content for translation.

Receive a quotation from Smartling

Once your translation basket has been sent to Smartling, follow the “Translation Jobs” link you are given in the confirmation message or click on the Translation Jobs tab. Then, click on the Batch name to be redirected to Smartling and complete the configuration of your project.

Receiving completed translations

Once done, your site is ready to receive completed translations.

Canceling translation jobs

If for any reason you want to cancel the translation of the pages sent from WPML to Smartling, bear in mind that:

  • You cannot manually delete or cancel jobs from the Translation Jobs tab on your website.
  • You cannot cancel individual jobs; however, you can cancel a submission, including all the jobs in it, from the Smartling dashboard.

Depending on your workflow configuration, you might not be able to cancel submissions that are already in progress. Please, contact Smartling support for more information.

Translating the Rest of Your Site

Once you’re done translating the content of your page, there could be untranslated texts in menus, sidebars, and similar places. No problem, you can use Smartling to translate the rest of your site.
