Tell us what you are trying to do? I have two sites hosted by the same hosting service. One site (dorisdeluxe.com) successfully used to translate every page etc. from English to Swedish using WPML. I would now like to use the same for hidden link but everytime I activate the WPML plugins, I am thrown out of wordpress and I cannot access my website. I have to disable all the WPML plugins before I can access WP and the site.

Is there any documentation that you are following? I am following the same way I got dorisdeluxe.com translated, which mean to say, I am following the WPML documentation and tutorials.

Is there a similar example that we can see? I do not think so. The only example I know of is mine.

What is the link to your site? hidden link . (dorisdeluxe.com is not yet live - it is in COMING SOON mode).

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML support!

When you say:

I can no longer access my site or wordpress

Is it not allowing you to enter wp-admin or does the blank screen appear? Perhaps it would be the best if you could provide me with temporary WordPress admin username so I could investigate the issue directly, along with FTP access.

I have marked your next reply private so you can safely add this information.

https://wpml.org/purchase/support-policy/privacy-and-security-when-providing-debug-information-for-support/

Please make a full backup of your site before sharing this info!

You can use plugins such as UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) or ask your host to perform a site backup.

Also, please do this, as it will allow us to see if any PHP errors are being produced.

Edit wp-config.php and insert the following lines:

define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );

Bruno Kos

Hi,

I activated WPML plugins and see no issues at the moment. Can you tell me how to reproduce the issue you're having?

Before we investigate this issue further, could you make sure your server conforms to our minimum requirements?
https://wpml.org/home/minimum-requirements/

Based on provided debug information, I can see the following - WP Memory Limit: 40M and your site is using more than that (around 70 MB).

Specifically, could you set WP Memory limit to at least 256MB and then let me know if this fixed your issue?
https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP

If unsure on how to set this, you can consult your host/server admin to do this. After you increase this value, you can confirm it by checking on WPML -> Support by finding the “Memory limit” value.

Bruno Kos

Hi Bruno,

The issue does not occur immediately. But after a few minutes you will notice a slowing down of certain things, e.g. string translations. And at some point, a few minutes or so later, you no longer get to do any WP admin or even visit the site. The error message of something like UNABLE TO ACCESS THE DATABASE comes out instead. I tried many times to get it going and thought that this time it would work but true enough after a few minutes, got kicked out.

On you second request to increase the memory limit, please see attached screenshot. I believe that it is now at 512MB and is that sufficient?

On your last request to test by reactivating the plugins, I am a bit hesitant because this website is my livelihood and I prefer to spend my time thinking of new designs and products as opposed to trouble shooting. However, if you think it essential I do as you ask, please let me know and I shall give it a try asap.

Cheers and many thanks for your infinite patience.

Hi Bruno,

I do see that WPML is activated. But as I mentioned before that is not where the problem resides. Not activating the plugin. It is when I start let us say doing some string translations that it starts to go very slow and eventually kicks me out altogether.

I am able to activate the plugin with no issues and as long as I do not touch any of its functions I am fine. It is when I start doing some translations that the issues start to happen. First a slowing down of the process and then complete inaccess to WP admin and the site.

I hope I was able to make some sense at this late hour.

Cheers.

Hi Bruno,

Please see attached screenshot. Try activating the rest of the suite of plugins from WPML (especially string translation) and see what happens. I too have the same result as you if I do not activate the others. But if activate everything related to WPML that is where the issues start.

Cheers.

Hi,

especially string translation

Now that you mentioned String Translation, I think we should focus on this. ST is a resource heavy plugin, especially if you have loads of strings in database and we do have reports of it causing issues on some hosts.

I've opened hidden link and can see that you have 33 904 string in database which does cause a load in the database.

Unfortunately, there is no easy "fix" for this - it may take some time to get it sorted and some work on database, because this is not a bug, but a performance issue instead that should be addressed in some of the next versions of String Translation. It will require changing some settings and cleaning up database from various non-used strings.

Please see how I helped some of our clients with this and see what lies behind this:

https://wpml.org/forums/topic/extra-slow-site-after-installing-wpml/

Please make a full backup of your site before trying this or make these changes on a staging/development site!

You can use plugins such as UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) or ask your host to perform a site backup
