I am trying to: make a clone of my website for purposes of experimenting some updates, after I made the clone the links to the translated pages open the pages in of the original website in English (the original language not the translated as it should be)

Link to a page where the issue can be seen:
this is the main page of the translated version in the new cloned site
hidden link
try clicking any link it will direct you to the English version in the original website before cloning

I have added the site url to my account but I didn't know how to enter the key in the cloned version

Hi and thank you for contacting WPML Support!

I will be happy to help you with this.

Can you please let me know what is the process that you used to clone the website?

For cloning your site, my recommendation is to use the following plugin:

Documentation can be found here: hidden link

Here is a small tutorial on how to use Duplicator:

After cloning, register WPML in your new site and enter the new key:
Please Login to your WPML account >> go to Sites page >> Remove your old site / domain from there >> and add your new site >> it will give you New key which you can add back in your site: https://wpml.org/account/sites/

I don't know if you will be changing hostings, too, but if you are, it is also important to make sure that both your future hosting package will respect the minimum WPML recommendations.

You can find them right here:
https://wpml.org/home/minimum-requirements/

Please let me know if following that process helps and solves the issue.

Kind regards,
Mihai Apetrei
