Hello,

The issue we report here, is similar to an issue we had reported 19 months ago in this ticket:
https://wpml.org/forums/topic/when-cloning-a-post-the-post-translation-is-not-fully-cloned/

Since then, we have gained extensive WPML support mileage.

The issue we are encountering is as follows:

1. Our website's main Language is English. Secondary is Hebrew - a right-to-left language.

2. We use Translation Editor for translating all our content, except when it is required to use string translation.

3. WordPress version, theme version and all plugins are up-to-date. Our theme - Consulting Theme by StylemixThemes, is your your list of compatible themes.

4. We use the Duplicate Post plugins to clone fully translated post types of many kinds (you can select the post types to be cloned, in the plugin's settings).

5. The Duplicate Post plugin is on your list of compatible plugins (last tested in 2017 as you indicate on your list).

6. The full description of the issue is found in a ticket we opened on the plugin's WordPress support forum, an hour ago. Here is the link:

https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wpml-compatibility-issue-translations-missing-in-clone/

Here is the transcript:

6.1. Recently, when we clone a post/page or any of the post types which we selected in your plugin’s settings, the Hebrew translation is not cloned. Instead, the Hebrew fields in the translation editor, are populated with the English Original.

6.2. Being one of the most seasoned WPML users, with many WPML support miles, I can tell its a compatibility issue, which most probably went sour with one of WPML’s plugins version updates.

6.3. Off-course, we managed to find a temporary workaround which most probably could indicate were the problem lies (this workaround is as a very prevalent recommendation by WPML support, whenever a translation is missing in translation editor, not necessarily with your plugin, but in many other situations):

In the cloned post/page, on Page Edit, you need to make a small change to the English version (the main language) of EACH element/item found in the page/post, save it (update), and then when you push the circular icon to get to the translation editor, you will see the missing Hebrew translations in place, for those items to which you made this small change.

Off-course, this is just a temporary workaround, which is very labor intensive.

But as I said, the workaround which works, clearly indicates where the current compatibility problem lies.

7. We have created a staging website, which is a complete identical copy of our main website, and in which you are free to make all your tests.

8. Please note that you will need a password for front-end. I entered it in the Password field below, next to the WordPress admin password.

9. If you would like to recreate my recent clone failure please clone the following vc_sidebar which is fully translated to Hebrew:
Dashboard>>vc_sidebars>>VC Right Sidebar - Privacy Policy. Than push the pencil icon (Edit the Hebrew Translation). You will notice that all the Hebrew fields in the translation Editor are populated with the English version.

Looking forward for your response.

Thank you,

Noam Kroll

Hello Noam,
Thank you for contacting WPML support.

I will consult our compatibility specialists about this issue and I will get back to you as soon as I get an answer.

Could you tell me if you already contacted the authors of the 'Duplicate Post' plugin?

Kind regards,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Thank you very much for your reply.

Yes,I did write the same on the plugin's support forum here:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wpml-compatibility-issue-translations-missing-in-clone/

And also sent the same to the plugin's developer email.

However, no reply has been received as of yet.

Thank you,

Noam Kroll

Hi Noam,
Thank you very much for your feedback.

I have created a test site with a fresh new WordPress install and WPML plugins installed and setup. I would like to ask you to access this test site, install the necessary plugins and try to reproduce the issue. This way we will be able to determine if the issue is reproducible in an environment other than the live site.

You can access the test site using this link: hidden link

Could you tell me if you were able to reproduce the issue?

Regards,
Carlos

Hello Carlos,

You probably didn't notice what I wrote you previously:

7. We have created a staging website, which is a complete identical copy of our main website, and in which you are free to make all your tests.
8. Please note that you will need a password for front-end. I entered it in the Password field below, next to the WordPress admin password.

So no need for unnecessary complications. You can simply do all your tests there. Feel free to do anything you need there.

You have all required credentials.

Thank you,

Noam Kroll

Hello Noam,
Thank you very much for your feedback.

It seems that there is an interaction issue between 'Duplicate Post' plugin and a third party functionality, not WPML or the theme. I disabled all unnecessary plugins and the issue disappeared. You can double check it in the 'Test EN' page I created and duplicated. All information is in the cloned pages.

In this case I recommend you to activate the plugins one by on until you see the issue again.

Please let me know the result of the steps above.
Regards,
Carlos

Thank you very much.

However, your reply left us exactly on the same spot !!

We followed your troubleshot recommendation but alas, couldn't find any third party plugin conflict which as you suggest, causes the issue.

Hi,

In this case I recommend you to activate the debug mode in the site by following this steps: https://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress and reproduce the issue.

Once the steps above are done I kindly ask you to let me know if there is any error or information in the debug.log file within the wp-content folder.

Note: The steps above are to try to find the cause of the issue but if this steps confirm that WPML is not culprit of the problem then it will fall outside of our support service.

Regards,
Carlos

I am sorry Carlos, but your answers exhaust me.

This is not the quality of support we are used to from WPML!

We are not technical experts/developers. We are ordinary site owners. And you give us plenty of technical - expert missions.

So no, thank you. This is NOT what we expect of you!!

If you are not willing or unable to assist us properly, let me know and I will escalate this ticket to your superiors.

Hi Noam,
I'm sorry, I assumed you had knowledge of programming. Please accept my apologies.

I will run the steps recommended in my previous message and will get back to you as soon as I finish.

Carlos

Hi Noam,

After applying the steps I found this error:

[02-Jul-2019 16:24:37 UTC] PHP Notice: Undefined variable: post_type in /home/krollcon/staging/1/wp-content/plugins/duplicate-post/duplicate-post-admin.php on line 304

I suspect this is the error that is causing the issue. Because the issue persists while all plugins are deactivated except WPML plugins and required plugins, and the parent theme is active.

Please confirm that the issue persists so I can escalate this ticket.

I also recommend you to update the plugin's authors about this issue.

Regards,
Carlos

Hello Carlos,

Thank you very much.

Yes, I confirm the issue persists.

I will raise this issue in the plugin's support forum, but I'm afraid that this plugin developer hardly responds on this forum.

Thank you,

Noam
