Hello guys,

I am wondering if there is a way to change a default permalink for a second language which is mydomain/sl (as Slovenian language) to custom link?

Why I am asking this, my second language /sl not accepting my keyword for SEO so Google not showing my site at any searching condition even I have done everything correctly.

Thanks in advance Aleks

Hi Aleks,

Thank you for contacting WPML Support.

The language URL slug is the same as the language code.

If you want to have a different language code, you need to create a custom language:

1. You can create a new language by navigating to WPML -> Languages -> Site Languages -> Edit Languages. Then click on "Add language" & fill the fields. In the "code" text field enter your new custom slug(URL) for your new language.

2. Then, duplicate the content to the new language(from Slovenian to the new language). You can duplicate your content in bulk in WPML -> Translation Management.

3. In the end, delete the original content and later you can remove the original language.

You may set the content in the custom language to be translated independently after you duplicate the content.

Also, make a backup (both files and database) for your site before updating/proceeding anything (Always a good practice!).

Hello Rohan,

Thank you so much for the pieces of information in the worst case scenario I will do it that way.

But I have a question why is the keyword and SEO not working as should in first /default case at translated landing/home page, but it works perfectly in all other translated posts/pages

Thanks in Advance Aleks

Hi Aleks,

Rohan is not available today so I will help you with this ticket.

Google or other search engine use their own algorithms to determine the ranking of the page. We can just make sure that pages are indexed in the search engine and visible but it is not up to us that on which query search engines will display those indexed pages.

You can clearly see here with special parameters hidden link that site is visible and indexed.

I would suggest you please contact the SEO specialist for these issues.
