We are currently using URL parameters for different languages: hidden link

For SEO reasons we want to switch to directories for different languages: hidden link

If we switch this will all the links on the site still work? For example, if we have a static link (not generated by wordpress) that uses a URL parameter will it automatically redirect to the new directory?

Also is there anything else we would need to worry about if we make this switch?

The reason I am being cautious is it is a very high traffic site.

Whenever I try to translate link targets it always times out at about halfway with either a 404 or 500 error to admin-ajax.js

Hi,

if there is a 500 error we need to find exactly what it is, so please enable the WordPress debug log. This will allow us to see if any PHP errors are being produced. More Info: https://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress Edit wp-config.php and insert the following lines:

define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );

Browse to the page with the issue and/or reproduce the issue.

Locate the debug log in: /wp-content/debug.log

Paste the latest lines here. No need to paste the entire log file, just 50 lines or so will do. Please censor any sensitive information.

If you can't find anything in the WordPress debug.log, please ask your hosting to check the server error log. This is because if the error affects the server only it won't appear in WordPress log.
