Hello,

I want to change the language URL format of my website from Parameter to Directory. Translations were set up by using "parameters", however translations are performing really poorly in google search results - which is why I would like to change the language URL format to Directory.

How should I go about this? Simply change the setting in the WPML options? I'm afraid of ending up with a lot of broken links. Do you have step by step instructions on making a smooth transition and setting up redirections?

Will my English website also be affected by this?

Hi and thank you for contacting WPML Support!

I will be happy to help you with this.

To accomplish that, all you would need to do is go to WPML > Languages and switch the settings accordingly, then save.

When you will switch to that, all the links that once were using a parameter (like "?lang=en") will now use "/en" instead). No worries regarding broken links as the old "parameter" links will simply redirect to the new URL language form.

Kind regards,
Mihai Apetrei

Hi Mihai,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, it is not working. I have switch the settings to Directory. When I am on the Spanish homepage for example, and clicking on one of the links on this page, I end up on the English version of the page.

Hi and thank you for the confirmation.

I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

Our Debugging Procedures

I will be checking various settings in the backend to see if the issue can be resolved. Although I won't be making changes that affect the live site, it is still good practice to backup the site before providing us access. In the event that we do need to debug the site further, I will duplicate the site and work in a separate, local development environment to avoid affecting the live site.

Privacy and Security Policy

We have strict policies regarding privacy and access to your information. Please see:
https://wpml.org/purchase/support-policy/privacy-and-security-when-providing-debug-information-for-support/

**IMPORTANT**

- Please make a backup of the site files and database before providing us access.

- If you do not see the wp-admin/FTP fields this means your post & website login details will be made PUBLIC. DO NOT post your website details unless you see the required wp-admin/FTP fields. If you do not, please ask me to enable the private box.

The private box looks like this: hidden link

In order to be able to help you faster, can you also please paste your WPML Debug information in the Debug information field?

I will be waiting for your response.

Kind regards,
Mihai Apetrei

Hi Mihai,

I'm encountering issues giving you access to our WP. My problem is similar the one described here: https://wpml.org/forums/topic/changing-language-url-format-2/ Would the solution provided there also work in this case?

Thanks!

Hi.

Unfortunately, there's no way I can tell if a solution will work or not on your site (I could only guess - and that's also a pretty old ticket, too - from 2016) until I don't have access to the site being able to test a few things.

Would you at least be able to use a plugin like "Duplicator" and create an archive of the full website+database and share it with me through a file-sharing service like google drive or dropbox?

Documentation can be found here: hidden link

Here is a small tutorial on how to use Duplicator:

Please let me know.

I will be waiting for your response.
