I am trying to: update a page after it has been translated by ICL.

Link to a page where the issue can be seen:
hidden link
and its translation:
hidden link
But it is actually on the back office I see the problem.
hidden link
And here is my ICL link:
hidden link

Step by step:

1. I have a French original page, with many medias, and some of these medias are used in other pages

2. I get it translated by ICL and fetch it from translation dashboard.

3. I control it in the front office - it si fine, and in the back office (through CTE) - it is fine.

4. I edit the translation in CTE (Classic Translation Editor) and save it again to make sure all strings are well registered.

5. I edit the French version (in Elementor), because I need to change a link.

6. I then open the translation in CTE: and BAM, I only have 29% translated. The translation of many medias is gone!
These are the medias that are also present in other pages - also translated by either ICL or CTE.
In fact, beause of this problem, I had to send all pages to ICL, hoping it would fnally get straight in the system. But it does not, I end up with empty translations on every new page I need to open!

7. So I go to ICL and "resend to CMS", but when I try to fetch it from WPML, it does not find anything new.

8. I try to edit it in ICL, and "redeliver", but again WPML does not fetch anything.

= So my only option seems to be to send again the page to translation in a new job!
Which is time consuming (especially because I need to tick all media one by one), and costly.
Or I need to translate myself again and again and again in CTE.
This is really painful... and has happened to me too many times.

When I say "images are translated via ICL", I mean I did like that:
In translation management dashboard, I selected the page, ticked all medias attached, and sent it to the basket then to ICL.

When I say "I only have 29% translated. The translation of many medias is gone!"
I mean that CTE shows only 29% translated. Media translation is empty and not ticked. In another case, I fnd them full of French strings. So I can't use CTE unless I translate everything again.
In the front office, they are still there.

Hi,

Can you tell me if you have a page at the moment where I can see this? So I would need any page where you have this issue at the moment, but where it has not been resolved yet.

A job ID would also work (or direct link to the classic translation interface).

In order to debug this issue further quickly, would you be willing to provide me with temporary WordPress admin username so I could investigate the issue directly?

Please make a full backup of your site before sharing this info!

You can use plugins such as UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) or ask your host to perform a site backup.

Hi,

I received a feedback from our translation services specialist, they are already aware of the issue and suggested the following.

- Go to your translation Jobs page at your ICL account
- Search for the document name you want and open it.
- Download the XLIFF for the translation.
- Then go to WPML -> Translation Management -> Translators, and add yourself as a local translator for the wanted Language pair.
- Then go to WPML -> Translation Management -> Translation Dashboard, and add your docs to the "basket".
- Go to the "Translation Basket" and chose yourself as a translator and send the docs to yourself.
- Go to WPML -> Translations, and you must find the job for the doc, choose it and from the bulk drop-down choose "Export XLIFF 1.2", and click Apply.
- It will extract a file to you, open it and you will find a code called "Original".
- Copy this original code, open the file that you have downloaded from the ICL site, and replace its original code with this one.
- Then go to WPML -> Translations, and import the file which downloaded from the ICL site, after you changed it's "Original" code.

Please let me know about the results, so that I proceed the information further!

Bruno Kos

Hi Bruno, I was out yesterday PM and am a little bit confused with what to do following your 2 answers:

- should I still send you the credentials?
I have 1 or 2 posts where the issue is still visible - with image translations missing, but I sent them to translations and they should be filled after I fetch them back. However, I am aquite sure it will happen again if I change the French original.
I also have a "clone" website" where I can let you play with this - but at the moment I am using it to test plugin updates.
By the way, do you think updating the latest WPML version may change the issue.

- I have used in the past the method you quote (and I forgot about it, I must say), so I may do it again, but really I can not do this long procedure anytime I change something on a page.

Best regards
Agnes

Hi Agnes,

I received some more information from ICL team about the issue and what is going on. Yes, these workarounds are definitely not something you can do in a long-term and will cause unnecessary amount of work, each time you make the slightest change on the content...

I will keep you posted on what translation services specialist will reply and how to proceed on this, whether we will be able to figure out what is going on behind the scenes and why are these media translations gone.

Bruno Kos

Hi,

In order to debug this issue , I will install Duplicator plugin, will create packages and will try this on my localhost and possibly escalate further to 2nd tier.

https://wpml.org/faq/provide-supporters-copy-site/

Let me know if this is OK with you.

If yes, I will need WordPress admin username and password so I could do this. I have marked your next reply private so you can safely add this information.

Please make a full backup of your site before sharing this info!

Apart from this, at this moment do you have any pages which returned from translation service and where you have not modified the original yet, so that we can have a look and reproduce the issue ourselves?

Bruno Kos

Hi Bob,
I have updated all my plugins, including WPML plugins, on my clone site.
I have tried update my "e-commerce" page with the same steps as above, adn got the same result.
I could goive you access to that one, that may be faster for you to check it out. (please send me the private screen).

I noticed something more: when opening in CTE a page that had been translated by ICL, my images tags were in English both left (French) and right (English), which is strange.
Then, I edited the French page, and reopened the English translation in CTE. This is where I get my image tags empty in English! And in the left column, they are in French, as they should be (see screenshot).

I checked on 1 particular image: X2-logistics logo.
In my media library, tags are fine in French and English. If I look at the "media translation" from WPML, I can notice something particular: the original image is said to be English (while in general my originals are in French, but may be I put that one before when I had set english as a primary language).
However, on another image (e-commerce) where the original is French, I have the same issue... it comes out empty, although it is properly set in WP media library, as well as WPML media translation.

So basically oit is fine in the media library, but kseeps bothering me in page translations, because I need to retranslate them all if I want to re-save the translation. What may be the reason? What workaround?

NB: on soem other pages that were translated yesterday night, it doid not happen...

Hi,

I marked you next reply as private again so that you could share credentials for the test site.

NB: on soem other pages that were translated yesterday night, it doid not happen...

As for this - can you test perhaps with some other pages now? Few days ago we released new versions of WPML, translation management, string translation and some other plugins and these address some of the bugs (some related to Elementor also) and they also include new features.

For example now, translations of the logos included in the "transport de voitures" portfolio page are blank again, although they are done in the media library, why that?

Hi,

When I try to enter the test site, I am prompted by the login screen, can you check this? I marked your next reply as private - you can put the server credentials into FTP.

However, these credentials may be correct, but I can see internal server error issue, so I'm not sure whether this is related to wrong credentials or the site being off-line at the moment.

Oh, sorry, to enter the test site you must enter first AgnesLP / Agnes007

I am updating the live site right now, so it may be briefly unavalaible indeed.

I will clone it back to the test site, to have an exact copy, I'll do that - please wait for another 15mn for it to be completed.

All done: you may play on the test site now.
I will also see if I can reproduce errors and how.
NB: if your WP password does not work on the test site, take the one of the live site (as it has been cloned). I think I used the same, but am not sure.
Thanks Bruno!
