Hi,
I am working on a Dutch site that is translated to English with ATE/PTC.
Dutch (source) is in 24 hour format
- Hotel: aankomst vanaf 14:30, vertrek tot 11:00
- Ontbijt: ma-zo 6:30-10:30
- Keuken: ma-zo 12:00-21:00
English is translated to 12 hour am/pm format
- Hotel: arrival from 2:30 PM, departure until 11:00 AM
- Breakfast: Mon-Sun 6:30 AM-10:30 AM
- Kitchen: Mon-Sun 12:00 PM-9:00 PM
How can I get that translated in the English/British 24 hour format. Most countries use the 24 hour format. Only the US uses AM/PM.

Note: I already submitted this as a feature request a long time ago. When will this be possible. I would expect that the ATE can do it automatically now that it uses AI.

This is my original ticket from June 2024, so almost 2 years ago I first asked this. Has nobody else asked for this? I mean, in most of the world and all of Europe, the time should be localised in a 24 hour format.

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the delay.
I have checked your previous report, and I see that it refers to DeepL not properly translating dates into UK English. In your current request, I see that you mention PTC instead.
Our internal documentation mentions that the update for DeepL was released earlier this year, and also that we did receive some requests about PTC, which are still under investigation. I am adding your voice to them to try to expedite the development.

Thanks and sorry for the late reply. Notifications were somehow turned off. It's enabled in my preferences, but it happens a lot that the support system doesn't enable it accordingly for new tickets.
True, my previous ticket was for DeepL. At that time PTC wasn't even released or at it's very early stage. However, time format is a universal thing. It doesn't rely on a translation method. If this was important enough to implement, why has this only been done for DeepL and not for your own translation system, or simply for all translation methods? And, why is this universal thing even under investigation and does it need more voices to implement in PTC?

Thanks for getting back.
I am requesting some extra information from our development leadership regarding the support for British English in PTC. I am sorry to admit my knowledge limitation on the topic, so I will refrain from making any further comment until I get some feedback from them. I see that hidden link lists this variant as one of their supported languages, while hidden linkr is not including it - this might affect the availability and results when using different translation engines.
I will make sure that I can give you an answer as soon as possible.

Thank you. And ok, I understand now that it's the translation engine that should support it in the first place. Since PTC is your own engine, it's all in the hands of WPML 🙂
Not sure how it works in WPML though. I can only select (one) 'English' as a language. The flag suggests it's British English, but under water it applies American English 'en_US' as the local.

Hello.
Yes, there needs to be a translation engine supporting the variation for us to connect it. As it happens with DeepL, you need to generate the variation in your WPML setup with the right language code, and then our ATE server, connecting your translation requests to DeepL, does the mapping.
I got a response from our PTC development team. While we understand the request and we have it filed already, we do not have current scheduled plans for extending our support for specific variations. We enlarge the number of available languages and variations within PTC when we are confident that we can provide a good outcome for them, following our principle aiming for "better than human" translations.
Regarding the misleading flag, I am raising this internally. With automated translations improving and extending their capacities and usage, it is legit to assume that a British flag returns British-accented results.

So with DeepL, how exactly do I generate the variation in the WPML setup? Is it under languages » edit language? And then set the Default locale to en_GB? Or is it a something under hreflang?
As for PTC, I don't ask for more language variations with a good 'better than human' outcome with perfect British, Canadian, Australian or whatever English. The current translation of English words is fine as it is.
The only request is to have a correct translation of the time format, which is country specific, not language specific.
PTC only needs look at the country part of the locale (like en_GB) and apply the common time format of that country. Everything else can remain as is. There doesn't need to be another variant in the Language mapping.
Or, if there needs to be more flexibility, have an option in the edit language screen to specify the time format, just like in the WP general settings (H:i or g:i A).

Sorry again for the delay in providing an answer to you, I wanted to make sure that I provided an accurate answer, so I checked with a number of developers and teams.
It turns out that we currently do not support the British variation when using DeepL, because our initial mapping tests did not offer the quality that we expected. This is currently under review, and your request has helped raise its priority. I am told that we plan to have it included fully for DeepL in our next major version for ATE, which is initially planned to land around the mid of May.
Both this ticket and also your original about DeepL are already on my bookmarks, and we have references to them in our internal development tickets. Once we can share some news about the DeepL and PTC support, I will be updating the right thread.
I am forwarding your suggestion to our PTC team. Our usual workflow involves adding full variation support, though.
