HI, I close the window where this thing running non stop and now I noted all my plugins dashboard etc. are also in different foreign languages. This is quite a headache and confusion. Can I revert back to only English to have these themes/plugins translations removed? Also I noted my DB grow much bigger, from like 60mb to 140mb. Pls help. My site has only 3 pages and I really don't want to mess w all the foreign languages when everyone reads English in my team.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML support.

Sorry for the late reply. we are loaded with long queue as of now.

WPML helps you to translate the pages, posts, etc even if a string/text that comes from a plugin.
You have to scan the plugins only if you want to translate some texts from the specific plugin.
Are you in that situation.?

My site has only 3 pages and I really don't want to mess w all the foreign languages when everyone reads English in my team.
- do you mean the backend or front end?

What is the exact issue you are having now?
Have you translated your pages and posts?

Let me know please.

Regards,
Riffaz.

Hi, Riffaz, thanks for the reply. If you see my further reply updates, I have managed to stop the process and now all WP dashboard show multi-languages. Questions-

1. how to remove these multi lingual feature on dashboard? It can I revert back to not having the plugins translated?
2. did my DB grow cos of this? noted it was 60mb and now suddenly doubled only after installing WPML and ran this process. Note I haven't added a single page or post or any other plugin. I read from your doc that this multilingual dashboard doesn't impact performance but my DB grew too much taking up too much space. Is this cos of WPML or cos of this string plugin translation?
3. how to turn this translation off permanently?
3.

Hi,

1. how to remove these multi lingual feature on dashboard? It can I revert back to not having the plugins translated?
- yes, you can delete the translations and remove the WPML plugin

2. did my DB grow cos of this? noted it was 60mb and now suddenly doubled only after installing WPML and ran this process. Note I haven't added a single page or post or any other plugin. I read from your doc that this multilingual dashboard doesn't impact performance but my DB grew too much taking up too much space. Is this cos of WPML or cos of this string plugin translation?
- Can you look at these topics and try what is suggested there?
https://wpml.org/forums/topic/table-wp_icl_string_pages-is-too-big/
https://wpml.org/forums/topic/the-table-wp_icl_string_pages-has-over-350000-records/
https://wpml.org/forums/topic/table-wp_icl_string_pages-does-not-stop-growing/

You can also find some information on what this table contains and how is it filled up.

You can try to reset the wp_icl_string_pages. This table is just a cache table.
- Go to WPML -> Support -> Troubleshooting page
- Press the "Recreate ST DB cache tables" button

Please make a full backup of your site before trying this or make these changes on a staging/development site!

You can use plugins such as UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) or ask your host to perform a site backup.

3. how to turn this translation off permanently?
If yes, and If you want to delete secondary language contents as well then please follow below steps:

Please backup your site completely before proceeding

1. Using Admin bar switcher >> switch to Secondary language >> Select all & Delete the English posts.
2. Then do same steps for pages/media images/taxonomy.
3. Deactivate the Secondary language in wpml >> languages.
4. Now you can reset WPML by Going to WPML >> Support >> Troubleshooting >> There, click on “Reset and deactivate WPML” - this action will remove WPML tables (tables with the 'icl_' prefix) from the database.

If you haven't done any translation yet. you can go directly to Step #5.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

HI, I think you misunderstand me completely! I purchased WPML to use it. So obviously deleting the plugin doesn't serve the purpose. I have already delete and reinstall the entire 4 plugins as mentioned and whatever's there before is the same. So clearly a deactivate delete plugin action didn't clear away the theme translation.

I will try the Reset and deactivate WPML action but what should I do after that??

Again, we bought the plugin so we want to use the plugin but we want to stop seeing our wp dashboard in different languages. We only want the dashboard in English and we want our post/pages/tags/categories etc. content to be translated.

Pls give specific advise and pls respond in a more timely manner?

Hi,

You can change your backend language from Users>Your Profile Language : hidden link

This select field will specify the language used for your backend. Please note that this will be only applied to your user.
If you want to browse your backend in a different language with a different user, you'll need to edit his profile to specify this.
Otherwise, the backend should be displayed in the language you used to install WordPress.

Let me know how it goes.

The same issue has been solved for another user here: https://wpml.org/forums/topic/change-user-interface-language/#post-5540345

Hi, I have tried to go the troubleshooting page and couldn't find the reset DB table option you said there is: You can try to reset the wp_icl_string_pages. This table is just a cache table.
- Go to WPML -> Support -> Troubleshooting page
- Press the "Recreate ST DB cache tables" button

So I have clicked the 2 reset buttons on bottom on troubleshooting page which says reset all existing translation job (which I have none), and reset deactivate wpml after clean up. I have done that and now the plugin is deactivated. I went to see the DB size and it's exactly the same as before I did the reset. So what does the reset do to clean up the DB tbls??

Again I really just need very simple explanation of this string translation for plugin and themes -

1. do I need to click on it to run or not? if yes, why I need to do that?
2. is this the option that requires writing to .mo file? if so, what is the path that I need to have the write access? all the language/wpml folder only or each parent folders write access also?

Hi,

I replied to your other question in the other ticket.

Regarding the big database:
Did you clean this as well? https://wpml.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5438061-solution_for_downsizing_icl_string_pages.png

Also, could you please look at these topics and try what is suggested there?
1. https://wpml.org/forums/topic/table-wp_icl_string_pages-is-too-big/
2. https://wpml.org/forums/topic/the-table-wp_icl_string_pages-has-over-350000-records/

ok got the cleanup button and I have clicked on the cleanup button.

The DB size is already reduced before that cos your colleague in the other thread told me about the SG optimizer cache problem which now my prod db size is back to normal due to the refresh of cache.

2. I can't find this button *Recreate ST DB cache tables* button according to your link to the topic. Where to find it?

Hi,

So you are using latest WPML plugins.
You did not provide the WPML Debug info so I could not check your WPML versions.

This option is no longer there, because this caching table is not used since 4.3.0 and will be removed eventually. You can truncate it though, please see this:
https://wpml.org/2019/10/wpml-4-3-with-revamped-string-translation/#comment-2689387

So you can truncate both icl_strings_urls and icl_string_pages directly within database and they will not be filling any more.

You can ignore this and your site and db are fine as you did with caching plugins.
