Hi there, we've got issues every now and then with translated content that suddenly disappears from the backend. The content that disappears is gone within the ATE for the specific page but is still visible on the frontend. So backend is showing us the icon that the page needs translation but on the frontend all translations for that page are there. For example, today it happened when updating a CPT post in the default language without changing anything on the page. After that update suddenly the translations for DE and FR were gone even though we translated everything the day before with automated translations by WPML and paid credits for the translations. I attached 3 printscreens. In the first one you see that the post that is highlighted needs translations for FR and DE. In the 2nd you see the ATE for the FR version of that page and you see that almost nothing is translated anymore. In the 3rd printscreen you see the page on the frontend of the website which shows that all the content is translated. Hope you can help because this is becoming very frustrating and unworkable for us. Let me know what you need to investigate these issues. With kind regards, |

Hello, 1. When you update the default language are there any major changes done for those strings? for example, if you have a sentence such as "Today is a good day" and you change it to "Today was a great day for a walk", the translation will be removed and ask for an update. 2. Are you able to reproduce this behavior on demand? or is it random? 3. Can you reproduce with a new test page? |

Sorry, I didn't see your reply. Below my answers to your questions: 1. When you update the default language are there any major changes done for those strings? for example, if you have a sentence such as "Today is a good day" and you change it to "Today was a great day for a walk", the translation will be removed and ask for an update. Answer: No, it mostly happens when nothing changes to the text on the page. If we make layout changes to the default language for example then we suddenly lose translations for the other languages. So after the layout change for the default language we get to see that the other languages need a translation update. And normally you just open the ATE for these languages and press update because everything is 100% translated already. But very often we open the ATE and then suddenly a lot of the translations are gone while they are still there when you visit the page on the frontend. I showed that in the images I attached in the previous message. 2. Are you able to reproduce this behavior on demand? or is it random? Answer: It happens randomly, but I think I can reproduce it. It happened two days ago again. I was editing a default language page and just added some CSS ID's to an element on the page. After that some translations for the other languages were gone but are still there frontend. 3. Can you reproduce with a new test page? Answer: I can try. But as mentioned earlier, it happens randomly. I will create a test page and see if I can reproduce. Thanks for the help. I hope we can get this solved because it's a big issue for us and already costed us a lot of time and frustration. The problem exists already for a long time and we are on the verge of going live with our website. With kind regards, |

Hi Bobby, I was able to reproduce the issue. I created a test page, placed completely new content in there and translated this content for all the three languages in our website. Then I made an edit in the main language. All I did was add an CSS ID to an element and inserted custom css. I published this content and then opened the ATE for the other languages. English was fine but once I opened Germany only 87% was translated. See attached image. So this is one example but this keeps happening randomly within our website. Cheers Richard |

Thank you for updating me! If possible please provide your WPML Debug information in the debug field below. http://wpml.org/faq/provide-debug-information-faster-support/ This will help me get an idea of the current environment and active plugins as I am not able to reproduce in a new sandbox at the moment. |

Everything looks ok, only recommendation would be to upgrade the MySQL Version to 5.6 or higher. I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to test the issue. **Before we proceed It is necessary to take FULL BACKUP of your database and your website. Providing us with access, you agree that a backup has been taken ** I often use the Duplicator plugin for this purpose: http://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/ NOTE: If access to the live site is not possible and the staging site does not exist please provide me with a duplicator package created with the duplicator plugin. Thank you, |

Thank you for the access details! I was able to reproduce this behavior, it looks like it goes from language to language per update, for example, the issue might be in the DE one time and EN the next. Please go to wp-config.php and add the following code define( 'WPML_TRANSLATION_AUTO_UPDATE_ENABLED', false ); then test again and let me know your results, please. Note: I have attempted doing this but the FTP access details are not working for me. |

Thanks Bobby. Just for my information, what is the code you provided exactly doing? |

It should prevent the content from being overwritten during the update of the default language. |

Ok, would be great if it works. Does it matter where I add the code in the WP Config file? |

It should not as long as it's before the stop editing here area noted by default in wp-config.php |

Ok I've added the code and will test tomorrow if it works for us. Just a few remarks. You shared a link to an errata about a similar issue. But actually this is not what is happening for us. In the errata it states the following: In our case it's the other way around, the content on the frontend is not changed but in the ATE the translated content is suddenly untranslated again. And the last thing I noticed in the errata is that this issue was resolved in WPML Multilingual CMS 4.5.9. When I take a look in the support tab within WPML menu item I see that we have 4.5.11 installed. So the issue should already be solved but it's not for us. Thanks Richard |

Hello, It will be easier to move forward with the debugging after testing using this workaround as that would allow getting a better idea as to what might be causing this behavior as this is not standard behavior. Let me know your results, please. |
