I am trying to:
Update translations of pages (Elementor page builder)

Link to a page where the issue can be seen:
hidden link

I expected to see:
Usually when saving the translation, the page is updated and the adjustment in the translation is published. In the page overview it would then show the 'pencil' symbol.

Instead, I got:
The page / translation is not updated. The page overview shows the 'gear' symbol. When clicking on the gear the translation module opens again, but the previous modifications are gone.
In WPML -> 'Translation Management' -> 'Translation Jobs' the page appears and it asks to 'select translator'.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting WPML support.

1.- I would like to ask you to follow these steps:
- Go to WPML -> 'Translation Management' -> 'Translation Jobs' -> Set your user as the translator (you must be added as a translator previously).
- Once your user is set as a translator then edit the page in the default language -> Make a small change in the content and update the translation.

Could you tell me the results of the steps above?

2.- Please increase the PHP Memory Limit. Minimum requirements are 128Mb: https://wpml.org/home/minimum-requirements/
You can add this to wp-config.php to increase WP memory:`

/** Memory Limit */
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M');
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M' );

- Add it above the line /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

Kind regards,
Carlos

Hello Carlos,

Thanks for your message. We followed the steps, but unfortunately no improvement. Regarding step 1, it still shows the gear symbol and when we want to edit the translation it takes us to the translations queue, see attached screenshot. We've added all users as translators, changed translation managers etc, but no results.

We didn't seem to face this problem until recently, and experience the same issue on other sites, so I'm thinking it might be caused by a recent update. The aim is that our clients (and ourselves) can update the translations via the pages manually, without sending it to translators.

If there's any other solution we could try, kindly let me know!

Thank you,

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,
Thank you very much for your reply.

If you click on 'Take and translate' are you able to translate the post/page?

Regards,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Yes then it works. However, as soon as we make another edit to the original page/language, the same issue happens again as described above.

Best,

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,
Thank you very much for your reply.

I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

Our Debugging Procedures

I will be checking various settings in the backend to see if the issue can be resolved. Although I won't be making changes that affect the live site, it is still good practice to back-up the site before providing us access. In the event that we do need to debug the site further, I will duplicate the site and work in a separate, local development environment to avoid affecting the live site.

Regards,
Carlos

Hi Nicolas,
Thank you very much for the information provided.

I consulted my colleagues about this behavior and although is not 100% incorrect, to be forced to use Translation Management is not expected nor correct.

I was able to reproduce the issue in the migrated site in the Gym page and in a newly created test page too. Due to this behavior, I suspect that the cause of the issue might be caused by a conflict with a third-party functionality. For this reason, I would like to ask you to follow these steps:
- Update any outdated plugins and themes.
- Flush any cache memory that might exist.
- Deactivate all plugins except WPML ones.
- Activate a default WordPress theme, like Twenty Twenty.
- If the issue disappeared then start activating the theme and then the plugins one-by-one until the issue appears again.

Could you tell me the results of the steps above?

Regards,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,

Thanks for looking into this. We've followed all the steps you proposed, but unfortunately no solution yet.

A couple of observations:
- If we make a change in the original language (for instance adding an extra 'dot'), that change often doesn't show in the translation module for the original language. On the front-end we can see it though. So it seems the translation module doesn't record the changes to the original page.
- After de-activating plugins we thought it worked at first, but then when we tried it for a second page, we run into the same issue.

There's definitely a bug or conflict, but we can't identify where exactly. Would it be an option to install an older version of WPML as a test, as we didn't face this problem a couple of weeks ago?

Thank you,

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,
Thank you very much for your feedback.

In this case, I would like to ask your authorization to create a copy of the site in order to run more tests in a local environment and try to isolate the cause of the issue. Also, this will allow me to double-check if the issue persists in a different environment (server).

Looking forward to your message.

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

Sure, not a problem. As this is a multisite, would you need any further access or you can make a copy as is?

Thanks

Hi Nicolas,
You have a point there.

Is it possible for you to share a copy of the single site only?

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

Not sure how that would work to be honest. I've made your account super admin though. It's a staging environment, so I don't mind any testing there if you can't copy it locally?
Regarding a potential server issue: we didn't have any problems with the functionality until a couple of weeks ago. On server side nothing has changed.

Let me know if I can assist in any way.

Thanks,

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,

I have escalated this ticket directly to our 2nd tier of support where our 2nd tier specialists will take a deeper look at the issue and will try to find a solution. I also explain to them that they can run all the troubleshooting tests on the staging site, so I kindly ask you to keep 'alive' this staging site while this ticket is still open 🙂

I will keep you updated on the evolution of this ticket.

Best regards,
Carlos

Dear Carlos,

I was wondering if the 2nd tier support already had a chance to look at it? If any further input from side is needed, please let me know.

Thanks and kind regards,

Nicolas
