Hello,

We have selected under Translation Management the option to "Copy Once" the values in custom fields. However, none of the custom field values are being copied over when creating the translation page.

After click the + sign to create a new translated page from an English page, then we select "copy content from English" it copies over the title/content, but not the custom field values.

Please advise

Also, how do we copy the "featured image" and "tags" to the new translated page automatically?

Hello, thank you for contacting WPML Support!

The custom fields that are set as copy-once, will be copied in the translated post as soon as the post is saved for the first time. This should happen also if you don't use the "copy content from English" option.
You can try saving the translated post as a draft and the custom field should be copied.

About the tags, you need to translate them to show them in the translated posts. If you don't need to translate them, you can just set the Tags taxonomy to "Translatable - use translation if available or fallback to default language" from WPML -> Settings -> Taxonomies Translation

Please verify if the "Copy taxonomy to translations" and the "Use the same featured image as set for the content in the original language" options are enabled in WPML -> Settings -> Posts and pages synchronization.

Thank you

Thank you,

When I click "save draft", the tags are not copied over. The option is set to: Translatable - use translation if available or fallback to default language

There is no option for "Use the same featured image as set for the content in the original language"

Can you advise on these 2 issues?

Hello,

1. Can you please confirm that the original issue about the custom field is solved?

2. About the tags, can you please check if the "Copy taxonomy to translations" option is enabled in WPML -> Settings -> Posts and pages synchronization?
If you have an old version of WPML, you can find that option in WPML -> Translation Management -> Posts and pages synchronization

Check also if translating the tags from WPML -> Taxonomy translation improves the situation

3. To synchronize the Featured images you need to enable the options in the "How to handle media for new content:" section in WPML -> Settings -> Media Translation
If the Media files are not new, you also need to "Set language information for existing media".

Please let me know if you need further details.

Thank you

1. Yes, the custom fields copied after clicking "save draft".

2. Yes. The "Copy taxonomy to translations" was checked.

"Check also if translating the tags from WPML -> Taxonomy translation improves the situation"

We do not understand what this means.

3. We do not see this nav choice or page: "WPML > Settings". Where is it in an older version?

Hello,

You can try translating the tags from WPML -> Taxonomy Translation.

Select the Tags as the taxonomy to translate and translate some of the tags.
Once you translated some tags, are those translated tags copied in the translated posts?

In the old WPML version, you can find the options for the Media translation in WPML -> Media translation.

We can't translate the tags before creating the new page. We copy over the English content, then export the pages via XML for translation. Were hoping tags would be exported in English and then we re-import translated, but looks like that's not possible?

We don't see a "WPML -> Media translation" page. Is there something missing?

I'm seeing their is a separate plugin for media translation... is there a version we can install that is compatible with the older versions of the plugins?

We cannot upgrade because the new WPML breaks our site and we don't have the budget to switch.

Hello,

you can download the Version 2.2.3 of WPML Media from here:
https://wpml.org/download/wpml-media/?section=changelog

About the tags, can you please check that they are set to "Translatable - only show translated items" in WPML -> Translation Management -> Taxonomies Translation?

Thank you

When the WPML Media translation plugin activated we get an error:

WPML Update is Incomplete
You are running updated wpml-cms-nav and wpml-media-translation, but the following components are not updated:

sitepress-multilingual-cms
wpml-string-translation
wpml-translation-management
Your site will not work as it should in this configuration Please update all components which you are using. For WPML components you can receive updates from your WPML.org account or automatically, after you register WPML.

We had the wrong version of the media plugin. Still trying that one out.

The plugin was activated and shows a number of options, but we need clarification on what happens depending on our choices. Are all images duplicated somehow? Where do the images go? We didn't want to duplicate the featured image, or any other images, at all. We'd just like the same featured image to be copied over to the translated page featured image field.

Media translation
You can check if some attachments can be duplicated to translated content:

Set language information for existing media
Translate existing media in all languages
Duplicate existing media for translated content
Duplicate the featured images for translated content

How to handle media for new content:
When uploading media to the Media library, make it available in all languages
Duplicate media attachments for translations
Duplicate featured images for translations

The documentation doesn't explain these options:
https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/media-translation/

Hello,

the Media duplication process does not duplicate the image files but only the related database entries. The duplicated database entries will point to the same image file.

Once the images are "duplicated" WordPress will be able to find them for all the languages.

We are updating our documentation about WPML Media to include more details about the options.
