This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.

Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.

This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem: I am trying to link 2 existing pages using the option 'This is a translation of'

This is pretty much the case for every page that has already been completed/published. New pages and some pages still in draft have the ability to be connected, but that seems to be all (although I haven't tested all 380+ pages/posts).

Solution: I would like to ask you to follow this steps: - Create a backup of the database - Run this query:

1 DELETE FROM wp_icl_translations WHERE element_id IS NULL

Hello,
Thank you for contacting WPML support.

I kindly ask you to check if any of the previous translations of this pages is in the Trash section. If it's there, then delete it and try again.

Kind regards,
Carlos

Hi there,

In this case I would like to ask you to follow this steps in order to isolate the cause of the issue:
- Back up your site first before making any change, this is for security reasons.
- Update all outdated plugins and themes.
- Flush any cache memory that might exists.
- Go to WPML -> Support -> Troubleshooting link -> Apply the troubleshooting steps pointed out in the attached image.
- Deactivate all the plugins that are not related to WPML.
- Switch for a moment to a WordPress default theme like Twenty Seventeen.
- If the issue is gone, activate one by one to see with which one there is an interaction issue.

Could you tell me the result of this steps?

Regards,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
We should have said initially that we had done all the normal troubleshooting steps as you outlined above. The only step we hadn't completed was the "recreate ST DB tables". However, that has not made any difference either.

This is pretty much the case for every page that has already been completed/published. New pages and some pages still in draft have the ability to be connected, but that seems to be all (although I haven't tested all 380+ pages/posts).

Hi,
Thank you very much for your message.

In this case I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take better look at the issue. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

Our Debugging Procedures

I will be checking various settings in the backend to see if the issue can be resolved. Although I won't be making changes that affect the live site, it is still good practice to backup the site before providing us access. In the event that we do need to debug the site further, I will duplicate the site and work in a separate, local development environment to avoid affecting the live site.

Regards,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
You are all good to go. Remember, although this is a dev/staging site, it's still running on the prod server, so please try not to kill the server while testing!
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Our 2nd tier specialists took a deeper look at the database of the site and found out that this pages were linked to translations in the past but there seems to be that at a database level the 'link' between the pages and their translation wasn't removed correctly.

We suspect that this could be a specific issue that happened in your site or a bug in our side. To isolate the cause of the issue I have created a test site with a fresh new WordPress install and WPML plugins installed and setup already. I would like to ask you to try to reproduce this issue in this test site and let me know the results.

You can access the test site by following this link: hidden link

Looking forward to your message.

Carlos

Hey Carlos,
Not quite sure what you are asking me to do. I assume you don't want me to completely rebuild all 380 posts/pages in a temp sandbox in 6 days and see what happens?
I'm just rewriting pages for this project at the moment as we transfer from WPBakery to Elementor, I don't really have the time to rebuild another set of pages in your sandbox too.
If you want me to do a particular process, please let me know what that is.
If there's some way of cleaning the WPML data structure, links etc from an old WPML site like iracambi.com, please let me know as that would be a great help in other projects too.
Kind regards,
Tim
