I am trying to: update the plugin, see screenshot for reference.

sorry for the wait.

We checked and from our side everything seems to be ok.

I got the suggestion to try to update the installation. To do it, click on:
- Plugins > Add New > Commercial > Check for Updates and/or
- Dashboard > Updates > Verify Again

After that, delete again the key from your account in and create a new one.
If possible, try to use the link provided in the WPML update page.

Thanks for your reply Laura,

we already did that several times with no luck.

In the end we decided to manually update the core plugin and then install via .zip upload the string translation and translation manager. After that the "you need to register WPML in order..." alert appeared again and after a new register now the updates and package downloads work.
