Hello,

This bug has been reported before, but I couldn't find a solution. What happens is that WPML is adding /fr to the htaccess code, which takes down the site until I can access the file and change it back to original.

The final recommendation is to set the permissions of .htaccess to 444. The problem is that I get other issues with other plugins if I do that.

Hi,

the problem you reported is a known issue. Our developers resolved it already and the fix will be included in the next WPML release.

In the meanwhile, you can try a workaround as described here:
