This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem: I get this error message when trying to activate the WPML plugin: Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error. Fatal error: Call to undefined function WPML\Container\make() in /volume1/web/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/sitepress-multilingual-cms/sitepress.php on line 173.

Solution: The Make Builder plugin from The Theme Foundry was the one causing the issue. Once deactivated, everything went back to normal.

I am trying to:
Install and activate WPML Multilingual CMS. I am running WP 5.2.2

Link to a page where the issue can be seen:
NA

I expected to see:
Network Activate succeed
The 3 other WPML plugins installed correctly and succeeded Network Activate

Instead, I got:
Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function WPML\Container\make() in /volume1/web/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/sitepress-multilingual-cms/sitepress.php on line 173

Hey,

Thank you for reaching out the WPML support!

Could you follow these steps and tell me how things work this time, please?

  • download again the WPML plugin (from here https://wpml.org/account/downloads/);
  • delete the existing version of WPML;
  • install the one downloaded at point #1;
  • deactivate all the other plugins;
  • activate a default theme (like Twenty Nineteen);
  • try again to activate only the main WPML plugin.

I looked for other customers reporting this issue and it seems that this did the trick for them. Please let me know how it goes for you.

Thanks,
Radu

I found out the plugin which was around but being used was the reason. The WPML plugin does apparently not work with Make Builder. Good new is I don't use that anymore so gone.

The one I had was, maybe worth mentioning to The Theme Foundry or for WPML to consider:

Make Builder
Your friendly drag and drop page builder for WordPress. Simple, fast and easy to use.
Version 1.1.8 | By The Theme Foundry

I will click the solved button hereafter.
Thanks for the guidance and hints
