Background of the issue:
I am trying to configure WPML on my site hidden link. Specifically, I want to disable the 'language switcher' in the footer section.

Symptoms:
When I deselect the 'language switcher' option and click 'save', the page turns blank. Additionally, in 'translation manager', I receive an error: 'There is a problem connecting to automatic translation. Please check your internet connection and try again in a few minutes. If you continue to see this message, please contact our support team.' My internet speed is 100Mbps upload & download, and I have increased WP memory as suggested.

Questions:
Why does the page turn blank when I try to save changes to the WPML settings?
How can I resolve the error in 'translation manager' regarding automatic translation connection?

Hi there,

I can see that you were waiting for your error log to be populated, were you able to get some results?

Hi,

I'll continue to help you with this issue.

We suspect a collision with the theme or another plugin might cause this problem. If possible, get your site into a minimum environment, switching to a default WordPress theme like TwentyTwenty-Four and having no plugins activated except WPML.

First, you must check if the problem persists when just the theme is switched to TwentyTwenty-Four (for example). If it persists, deactivate all plugins except WPML and its add-ons. Then, please check if the problem persists. If it does not persist, start by activating the plugins individually and checking when the issue comes back, then report to me which plugin was the culprit.

**** Important! Please make a full site backup (files and DB) before you proceed with those steps****

*** If your site is live, you might want to try those procedures in a staging environment or a snapshot of your site on your local server or another server. ***

Regards,
Itamar.

Hi,
I will try out this trouble-shooting procedure in a couple of days.
As a workaround is it possible to set 'Browser language redirect' to 'Always redirect visitors based on browser language (redirect to home page if translations are missing)' directly in the database using 'phpmyadmin'?

Hi,

I strongly recommend that you avoid modifying this option through the database. In any case, you should be aware that this option is only available once every 24 hours (minimum). On a second attempt to visit your site within 24 hours, users will not be redirected according to the language of their browser. This enables users to switch languages as they wish. Please read about this option and its implications here.

https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/automatic-redirect-based-on-browser-language/

If you must have redirection, I suggest setting it up with a redirection plugin.

Otherwise, we will wait to hear if you need further assistance from us regarding the main issue of this ticket.

Regards,
Itamar.
