I noticed about 24 hours ago that my site had basically stopped working (web pages were taking more than a minute to return, when they usually take a few seconds. I was getting 503 errors).

I disabled all plug-ins and one by one re-enabled them... it turned out that the problem is with the WPML String Translation plugin... when that's enabled, the site doesn't work, when it's not enabled the site works fine.

I noticed that, in the database, the wp_icl_string_pages table has more than 1 million rows.
(In a backup of the site I took a few months ago, this table had around 10,000 rows, so it's grown by about a million rows some time since then).
It's possible that could be the source of the issue... that a query on such a large dataset is slowing down the whole site.

Searching on the web, I found that other people are having the same issue. For example, the last entry in this forum thread is from 4 days ago, and the person has the same issue of WPML String Translation growing the database very quickly (5mb per minute).

I was wondering is this an issue you´re aware of and if so is there a fix for it?

Thanks and best wishes,

Hello Darran,

I wonder what happens if you can deactivate strings registration as it is explained in this article.

If possible please check the recommendations of this article and let me know your results
