Problem:
The client is developing a website and wants to use WPML to translate it into Japanese. Initially, they plan to use the domain mtcsys.com.cn for the Japanese version before finalizing the content on http://www.mtcsys.jp. They are inquiring whether they can start with mtcsys.com.cn and later switch to http://www.mtcsys.jp, and how to migrate the content between these domains.
Solution:
We advised the client that they can temporarily use the mtcsys.com.cn domain during development and later switch to http://www.mtcsys.jp for the Japanese site with WPML. Here are the steps to set up the domain and prepare for the switch:
1. Set WPML to use directory mode for languages:
- Go to

WordPress Dashboard > WPML > Languages > Language URL Format

.
- Check the

Language name added as a parameter

checkbox.
- Click the

Save

button.
- Go to

WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks

.
- Click the

Save

button to flush the permalinks cache.
2. Perform the translation under mtcsys.com.cn and mtcsys.com.cn/ja.
3. Once satisfied with the setup, activate different domains per language by going to

WPML > Languages > Language URL Format

and adding the domain for Japanese.
