Problem:
Original text was not appearing in ATE when user tried to translate the content.

Solution:
There were a couple of database columns missing from "wp_icl_strings" table. Ran the following query:

ALTER TABLE `wp_icl_strings`
ADD `location` bigint(20) unsigned NULL AFTER `string_package_id`,
ADD `wrap_tag` varchar(16) NOT NULL AFTER `location`;

and then simply made a little change in the content and edited the translation.
