Hello,

I am experiencing an issue translating a Divi Theme Builder template with WPML.

Environment:

WordPress
Divi
WooCommerce
WPML (with WooCommerce Multilingual installed)

The template I am trying to translate is the Theme Builder body template named:

"Corps par défaut Catégorie de produit"

This template is assigned to WooCommerce product categories. It is a very simple layout containing only a few standard Divi modules and a Yoast shortcode. There is no complex custom code.

Problem #1:
When I translate the template and open the WPML Translation Editor, the editor loads indefinitely and never finishes loading. No error message is displayed.

Problem #2:
As a workaround, I tried switching the WordPress admin language to English and opening the translated version directly from Divi Theme Builder. However, when I edit the English version, the changes are also applied to the French version. It appears that both languages are referencing the same Theme Builder layout instead of separate translated layouts.

Example of a category page using this template:
lien caché

(It is normal that no products are currently displayed on this page because the products have not yet been translated.)

Could you please help me determine:

Why the WPML Translation Editor never finishes loading for this Theme Builder template?
Why editing the English version also modifies the French version?
Whether there is a recommended configuration for translating Divi Theme Builder templates assigned to WooCommerce product categories?

Thank you for your help.

Additional information regarding troubleshooting:

Following the issue with the Translation Editor loading indefinitely, I followed the recommendations provided by the support assistant and performed the following actions:

* Increased the WordPress memory limit.
* Temporarily switched from my child theme to the Divi parent theme.
* Temporarily disabled WP Rocket.

Unfortunately, none of these changes resolved the original issue. The WPML Translation Editor for the Divi Theme Builder template still loads indefinitely.

However, during the troubleshooting process, a large number of French pages unexpectedly ended up in the WordPress trash. I restored all of them immediately. At the moment, everything appears to be functioning correctly again, but this behavior was unexpected and concerning.

I have now:

* Restored the affected pages.
* Re-enabled my child theme.
* Regenerated WooCommerce product lookup tables.
* Cleared WooCommerce transients.
* Verified that the site appears to be functioning normally.
* Created a full backup before proceeding further.

The original problem remains unchanged: the Divi Theme Builder template named **"Corps par défaut Catégorie de produit"** still cannot be translated because the WPML Translation Editor never finishes loading.

I wanted to provide this additional information in case it helps identify the cause of the issue.

Hello,

I would like to ask for temporary access to your site’s wp-admin to investigate the issue further.

It is important to note that you should back up your site and database before proceeding, and you can use a plugin like Duplicator for this purpose. Here’s a link to the plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/

If you do not see the form below, please do not enter your credentials as they will be publicly exposed:

The only global template that I couldn't translate with ATE is this one : lien caché

And I do see the stuck template parts : lien caché

Is that the template you are talking about?

Turns out the XLIFF that is sent to translation editor exceeds 1MB. Since your current file is above it, you will need to reduce its size. Or use a different translation methode.

The size could be explained by the use of multiple dynamic Woocommerce Divi blocks in a single page, the metadata is big for those blocks. Which significantly increases the file size. Consider removing or extracting this data before translation.

You can also try translating it using https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/#how-to-use-manual-translation or through CTE.

To switch from the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) to the Classic Translation Editor (CTE) in WPML, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to WPML -> Settings.

2. On the settings page, locate the option for "Editor for new translations."
- Select "Classic Translation Editor."

3. After setting the editor to CTE, create a new translation job
- Follow the prompts to create a new translation job for the desired page.

Once done, you can switch it back to ATE again. Let me know if you'd like me to do it.

Hi,

The elements I want to translate are in Divi > Theme builder, not in Divi Library (bibliotheque in french).

I have put these layouts in the Translation queue.

Do you agree on switching to CTE (Classic Translation Editor) editor for these blocked templates? If yes, I can start the translation for you and you can review it later,

Then I will activate the intial editor (ATE, Advanced translation editor).

So for blocked content, use CTE and for all rest, use ATE.

I need your confirmation to understand how you would like to proceed,

Hello,

Thank you, switching to the Classic Translation Editor seems to have solved the issue.

I have a few follow-up questions:

In the future, whenever I need to translate a Divi Theme Builder layout, should I temporarily switch from ATE to CTE and then switch back afterwards?

Is there a way to identify which Divi modules are generating most of the XLIFF size? The layout is quite simple from a visual perspective, so I was surprised to learn that the generated file was over 1 MB.

Is the 1 MB XLIFF limit fixed, or can it be increased through WPML settings or server configuration?

No way to use automatic translation with CTE ?

Thank you

Romain

Hello Roamin,

You can use CTE in any case you want, but I recommend to only use it in case you see another template with a huge XLIFF file.

To debug the exact content, you can download the XLIFF file of the stuck translation job and inspect its content to find the cause, here are the steps :

1. Go to WPML > Translation Management > Translators, add yourself as a translation manager by choosing "Select an existing user and set as Translator", and then do the same to Add a Translator.
2. Send the job to translation.
3. Go to WPML > Translations and download all jobs, which will include the XLIFF files : lien caché
4- You will see then if any of the files exceeds that limit, see which block is too big.

The limit is strictly 1MB because it is a huge indicatiom that the text file is too big > Leads to issues related to automatic translation, usually it wouldn't even reach 0.1MB , we cannot change this limit.

And you are right, CTE doesn't have automatic translation,

Hi Ilyes,

The heaviest XLIFF file is 76ko.
So what is the problem ?

Okay I did a proper debug with one example "panier", here is what I found :

The failing XML is valid XML. I do not see malformed XML, broken CDATA, unbalanced shortcodes, or HTML tags.
The actual bad unit for exemple in panier.xliff is "

- trans-unit id="package-string-40-10051"
- module: et_pb_wc_cross_sells
- group: Main Content/Row

That unit is the problem because this single shortcode is bloated by corrupted Divi metadata:
- source length: 17,210 chars
- global_colors_info attribute alone: 16,960 chars
- repeated refs:%22sale_badge_color%22: 360
- %22title_text_color%22: 360
- %22price_text_color%22: 15

So the failure is not file size in the normal sense. It is one huge Divi global_colors_info attribute full of repeated global color mappings. WPML/ATE is likely treating this as an oversized/invalid tag payload and surfacing it as “file size limit exceeded / execution expired”.

Locally, the same corruption exists in the DB on:
- wp_posts.ID = 17323
- post_type = et_pb_layout
- post_name = panier
- post_title = panier1
so for other layouts I'm suspecting similar issues,

Best fix: open Divi Library layout , edit/recreate the Woo Cross Sells module, and save so Divi regenerates global_colors_info. A DB-level fix would be to remove or normalize only the global_colors_info="..." attribute from that et_pb_wc_cross_sells shortcode; the visible colors are already stored in normal attributes like price_text_color="#896214".

The next step is to detect the exact block for each blocked layout to see if the pattern is consistant,

Let me know if you have any questions,

Hello,

Can we please keep this ticket open for a few weeks, so that I can test it on another client's website running with Divi 5 ? Maybe it will solve the problem.
