Problem:
The client reported that their site loads very slowly when WPML is active, despite having updated all PHP settings. This issue began after a recent update, affecting both the backend and frontend. The client had already tried updating plugins, clearing caches, and adjusting server settings without success.
Solution:
We recommended increasing the PHP memory limit to at least 512M through the client's hosting provider. Additionally, we advised the client to:
1. Create a full site backup.
2. Update any outdated plugins or themes.
3. Flush any existing cache memory.
4. Deactivate all plugins, including WPML ones.
5. Activate a default WordPress theme, like Twenty Twenty.
6. Reactivate the WPML plugins.
7. Gradually reactivate the theme and other plugins one by one to identify the problematic component.
If these steps did not resolve the issue, we suggested creating a staging site using the WP Staging plugin for further testing without affecting the live site. After identifying and fixing an issue in the languages table of the database, we asked the client to update the language names and all outdated plugins.
