If your custom code uses WordPress API calls, there should be very little work for you, as WPML hooks to many WordPress calls and adjusts them to work correctly on multilingual sites.

WPML is a WordPress plugin. We’re not familiar with similar Magento extensions. If you’re looking for multilingual e-commerce, there are several e-commerce plugins that work great with WPML. I recommend looking at WooCommerce.
