You use credits to pay for automatic translation in WPML. You can buy prepaid credits and assign them to a website, or choose the pay-as-you-go model and get an invoice at the end of the month.

How do automatic translation credits work?

In WPML, credits act like currency. When you send text for automatic translation, WPML calculates the cost in credits.

Translating one word into each language will cost you:

1 credit Azure

2 credits Google

2 credits DeepL

4 credits WPML AI

How much do credits cost?

How much you pay for credits depends on how you buy them (prepaid or pay-as-you-go). Pay-as-you-go has the best price per credit and the more credits you use, the cheaper it is.

For details, see our pricing for automatic translation.

How do I calculate credits when translating from a language that uses characters?

When translating from languages like Japanese, Korean, or Chinese (Simplified or Traditional), you need to convert characters into words to determine how many credits you’ll need.

To calculate the credits:

  1. Multiply the number of characters by 0.55 to convert them into words. For example, 1,000,000 Chinese characters become 550,000 words.
  2. Then, use our calculator to see how many credits you’ll need to translate that number of words. Remember, the number of credits will depend on the translation engine you choose and how many languages you’re translating into.

How do I get credits?

Multilingual CMS and Multilingual Agency accounts include 90,000 and 180,000 credits respectively. This is enough to translate a typical website.

If you need more credits, buy them in your WPML account. There, you can check your balance, see transaction history, and add more credits when needed.
