WPML’s translation editor shows you formatting markers of texts in the original language — like bold text, italics, and links — so you can apply them to translated text.

The Advanced Translation Editor applies formatting markers by default when translating automatically. If you make edits to the automatic translations or add your own translations, you need to re-apply the formatting.

Applying markers to translated text

To apply the marker from the default language text to the translation:

  1. Hover over highlighted text to see the markers applied.
  2. Select the translated text you want to apply the marker on.
  3. Click on the markers and save.

Below the markers, the editor shows you any links included in the selected sentence.

You can add them as any other marker by highlighting the translated text and clicking on the a tag of the particular link. You don’t have to edit the link.

Applying nested markers to translated text

Some texts have nested markers, such as a bold tag inside an italics tag inside a hyperlink. In these cases, you need to apply formatting markers in the correct order to be able to save your translation.

1. Hover over default text to check which markers apply and their order. The right order is to first apply the outermost marker in your HTML and move inward.

In the editor, look at the colored border lines around the text. If you have multiple markers, there will be multiple border lines around the text, each one representing the formatting marker of the same color. The first formatting marker to add is the one on the outer border line, and then move inward.

In our example below, when hovering over the word “Penguins”, the first marker “mark” is pink which is the color of the outer border line. So, the order of markers is mark (pink) → em (purple) → a (blue).

2. Highlight the translated text you want to add markers to and add the markers in the correct order.

Fixing the marker order

If you add formatting markers in the wrong order, you can simply remove them by clicking on the x icon next to each marker. Then, you can add them again correctly.
