Symptoms:
Without any setup, I can manually translate my pages via custom fields, which creates an independent copy rather than a classic translation. I can also use my translation service, Crowdin, without setting up custom fields for translation.

Am I correct that configuring custom fields for translation is necessary to use the WPML Translation Editor?
If I'm not using WPML for my translations, is there any reason to set up my custom fields for translation?
