Problem: The client is setting up a multi-domain environment with German language for different regions (Germany and Austria). They encountered issues where the Austrian domain did not clone properly from the German domain, resulting in incorrect URLs and missing product availability. Additionally, the Austrian site lacked translations for standard strings that were present on the German site. Solution: Firstly, we recommended installing the WPML SEO addon to handle the translation of SEO data, including URLs, which can be found under Plugins > Install plugins on the "Commercial" tab. For the issue of missing translations, since most themes and plugins, including WooCommerce, do not provide complete language files for Austrian German (de_AT), we suggested a workaround: 1. Define Austrian German as a custom language in WPML. 2. Locate the WooCommerce German language files at
wp-content/languages/plugins/woocommerce-de_DE.po
and
.mo
. 3. Duplicate these files and rename them to
woocommerce-de_AT.po
and
.mo
. This approach allows the Austrian site to use the German translations, addressing the issue of missing strings.
