Background of the issue:
I am trying to export string translations from a development site to a production site using WPML. I had a similar issue before, and modifying the WPML plugin code resolved it temporarily until a plugin update fixed the problem.

Symptoms:
String translations do not import/export English translations.

Questions:
Why are English translations not being imported/exported?
Is there a way to ensure that future plugin updates do not override custom code changes?
