Problem:
The client is experiencing an issue where translating a post in WPML from French to English randomly overwrites the English content of another post with French content. This problem seems related to a known issue where editing translated posts directly can result in lost content.
Solution:
First, we recommended adding the following line to the wp-config.php file after ensuring a full site backup:
define('WPML_TRANSLATION_AUTO_UPDATE_ENABLED', false);Next, the client should navigate to Settings >> Permalinks, click 'Save Changes' (without needing to modify anything), and clear all types of caches. Additionally, we suggested performing WPML troubleshooting steps:
1) Go to WPML >> Support page, click on the Troubleshooting link.
2) On the Troubleshooting page, execute the following actions in the *Clean up* section, waiting for confirmation after each:
- Clear the cache in WPML
- Remove ghost entries from the translation tables
- Fix element_type collation
- Set language information
- Fix WPML tables collation
- Assign translation status to duplicated content
- Fix terms count
- Fix post type assignment
- Cleanup and optimize string tables
If the issue persists, further debugging is necessary. We asked the client to create a copy of their site using the Duplicator plugin, share it via Google Drive, and provide exact steps to replicate the bug for further assistance.
