Overview of the issue
On a fresh WPML 5.0.0 site, the add-language list (WPML → Languages → Site Languages → Add / Remove languages) offers 48 languages and Norwegian Bokmål is not among them. Searching for “Norwegian” or “Norwegian Bokmål” says the language does not exist, and adding a custom language with the code no says the language already exists in the system.
Since WPML 5.0 the add-language list comes from WPML’s language catalogue rather than from the list shipped with the plugin, and the catalogue did not carry Norwegian Bokmål. Sites that had Norwegian Bokmål before updating keep it; the language was only missing when adding it to a site for the first time.
Workaround
Norwegian Bokmål was added to WPML’s language catalogue on September 16, 2026. WPML refreshes its language list from the catalogue on its own, so the language appears in the add-language list without any change on your site.
Do not add a custom language with the code no as a way around it: WPML reports that the language already exists, because Norwegian Bokmål is in the list WPML ships with, and a custom language with that code would clash with it once the catalogue entry arrives.
If Norwegian Bokmål is still missing from your add-language list, ask a support question and mention this page.
