Background of the issue:
I received a message from IT that the WPML plugin is causing the server load to reach 100%. I tested this by deactivating WPML and all its addons, which resulted in the load dropping. The issue can be seen at lien caché.

Symptoms:
The server load reaches 100% when WPML is active.

Questions:
Why does WPML cause the server load to reach 100%?
How can I resolve the high server load issue caused by WPML?
