Background of the issue:
I am trying to use the WPML plugin on my site lien caché. I encountered an issue where the WPML plugin cannot connect to wpml.org. Additionally, when I try to access string translation, I receive an error message.

Symptoms:
WPML plugin cannot connect to wpml.org. When accessing string translation, I get 'There has been a critical error on this website'.

Questions:
Why can't the WPML plugin connect to wpml.org?
What is causing the critical error when accessing string translation?
