You can manually update WPML by reinstalling it via the OTGS Installer plugin. This process keeps your existing translations intact and re-enables automatic updates.
Please create a database backup of your site before updating WPML. You can do this using plugins like Duplicator or BackupBuddy.
If you haven’t updated WPML in a very long time, follow the steps to update it gradually.

How can I update a very old version of WPML?
If you haven’t updated WPML in a long time, it’s important that you update it gradually:
- Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins.
- Deactivate and delete WPML and all its components.
- Next, go to the WPML changelog and download the major WPML version closest to yours. For example, if you have WPML 3.9, the closest major version would be 4.0.8.
- In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins and upload the WPML version.
- Repeat these steps and update WPML one major version at a time. Once you have the latest version of WPML, install the latest versions for the rest of your WPML add-ons.
