Overview of the issue
On WPML 4.9.3 and 4.9.4, the editor can show the message “WPML tried to translate this page three times and failed. To get it fixed, contact WPML support.” although nothing on your site is wrong.
Cause
WPML 4.9.3 added an automatic cleanup of a misconfigured alias-domain setting. On 4.9.3 and 4.9.4 this cleanup clears the alias but does not show the Migration Wizard on the same page load. Until you open the Translation Dashboard, every translation attempt receives HTTP 426 (”WPML has detected a change in your site’s URL”). Each failed attempt raises the job’s retry counter, and after three attempts the editor shows the message above.
How to Confirm It Is This Issue
- Go to WPML → Support → Logs. You see a cluster of HTTP 426 responses from around the time the problem started, with the text “WPML has detected a change in your site’s URL”.
- Once you run the Migration Wizard, the Advanced Translation Editor registers the site as a migrated copy (
KIND = attached_copy), with the previous domain as the original.
Workaround
Update to WPML 4.9.5 or later. The update closes the reset window for good and the translation retries on its own.
If you cannot update yet, register the site with the Migration Wizard and retry the job:
- Go to WPML → Translation Management. The Migration Wizard appears.
- Run the wizard and choose Copy with migration code. This registers the site as a migrated copy.
- Open the affected post from the post list or the Translation Dashboard and click its in-progress icon. The job retries, the counter resets and the editor opens. You do not need to cancel or recreate the job.
On WPML 4.9.5 or later the Migration Wizard no longer exists and this cause no longer applies. If you see the message on 4.9.5 or later, something else is wrong: ask a support question and attach your WPML Support Logs.
