Translations added via XLIFF disappear

We decided that for certain posts we wanted to use automatic translations, so we purchased credits and selected the 'Advanced Translation Editor' for new translations. Symptoms: When I modify a page that was previously added and publish it, the translations added via XLIFF disappear. If I switch back to the 'Classic Editor', I can add the old translations back. Everything works fine if the page has not been modified. Questions: Is this normal in such a situation, and is there a way to ensure that translations do not disappear?

Background of the issue:
