Problem: The client was trying to add a custom language and set one language to 'a different domain per language' using WPML, which led to the disappearance of all site posts/content. Solution: First, we confirmed that the content did not actually disappear from the backend after adding a new custom language. It's important to ensure that no languages were deactivated or removed, and no manual edits were made on WPML's languages table in the database. Regarding the site URL format, it is not possible to use a different site URL format for different languages. All languages must use the same setting, either all as 'different domain per language' or all as 'language directories'.
