Regarding your question about Hreflang tags, yes, WPML efficiently handles the insertion of the hreflang tag for each translated post. This is crucial for letting search engines know about the language and regional targeting of your content, thus aiding in proper indexing.
As for sitemaps, they are typically managed by SEO plugins like Yoast SEO or Rank Math. If you are using any of these SEO plugins, I recommend installing the WPML SEO plugin. This plugin works seamlessly with the mentioned SEO plugins to generate a multilingual sitemap, ensuring that all language versions of your site are appropriately indexed by search engines.
When you use automatic translation for your entire site, it will only translate items that haven't been translated yet. Any articles that have already been translated and linked with their respective translations will not be translated again.
