Getting started with AST Language Sevices and WPML

To send content for translation to AST Language Sevices, install the following plugins on your website:

  • WPML Multilingual CMS – the core plugin
  • WPML String Translation – this plugin will allow you to translate interface strings

You can download them from your wpml.org account. If you do not have an account yet, you can create a new one by choosing WPML Multilingual CMS or Multilingual Agency plans.

Working with AST via WPML

Here are the basic steps of working with WPML and AST. For a full walkthrough, check out our page about using WPML with a translation service.

Connecting Your Website to AST

First, you need to connect WPML with AST. Part of this very simple process is to request your AST API token.

To request your API token fill out the form at the bottom of AST’s Token Page.

Alternatively, you can send an email to office@astls.co.uk with ‘WPML token request’ as the subject line. One of AST’s Project Managers will send you your unique token which you need to copy and paste into the authentication box in WPML.

Sending content for translation

Once your site is connected to AST, you can start sending your content for translation.

Receive a quotation from AST

Once received, AST’s PM team will analyze your content using its specialist translation (CAT) software to check for repeated or untranslatable (ie non-chargeable) text, or for Translation Memory (TM) matches with your previous projects.

Where relevant they will contact you to discuss detailed turnaround requirements or priority languages/files. Your quotation will then be sent to you via email. Once you have AST’s quote, you will have an opportunity to clarify any final queries with us by email or phone. When you are happy, you can place and confirm your order via email. You’ll receive an order confirmation and, if you’re a new client, details of the payment terms.

Receiving completed translations

Once done, your site is ready to receive completed translations.

Canceling translation jobs

If the translators haven’t started working on your content yet, then pausing or even canceling the project is straightforward. Simply send an email to AST or to your PM with your instruction. However, if the translations are underway,  they may have to invoice you for work already completed, as per AST’s T&Cs.

Translating the Rest of Your Site

Once you’re done translating the content of your page, there could be untranslated texts in menus, sidebars, and similar places. No problem, you can use AST to translate the rest of your site.
