I have a question regarding the settings under
WPML > Settings > Custom Fields Translation.
My website contains a large number of Custom Fields, including fields for:
- icons / icon IDs
- URLs and internal or external links
- selection fields (dropdowns, checkboxes, selects)
- purely technical or layout-related fields
My current understanding is:
- Only Custom Fields that contain language-dependent content should be set to “Translate”
- Fields such as icons, URLs, IDs, or other technical values should not be translated (e.g. set to “Do not translate” or “Copy”)
My specific questions are:
1.) Is this general approach correct?
2.) Are there best practices or recommendations regarding which types of Custom Fields should usually be translated and which should not?
3.) Which setting (“Translate”, “Copy”, “Copy once”) would you recommend for:
- icons
- URL fields
- selection fields (dropdowns / checkboxes)
- technical or layout-related fields?
My goal is to avoid unnecessary translations while ensuring that all relevant content is translated correctly.
This provides an overview and examples of the translation preferences that should ideally be assigned to the specific content held in each custom field.
