Dieses Thema ist gelöst. Hier finden Sie eine Beschreibung des Problems und der Lösung.

Problem:
Pages that have parent pages are being duplicated indefinitely across all languages, creating URLs like 'https://www.gastronovi.com/de/module/kassensystem/kassensystem/kassensystem'. With WPML deactivated, these duplicate URLs redirect to the main page URL.
Solution:
We have reviewed the issue and confirmed that although the URLs are accessible, they are not being indexed by Google, which means there should be no SEO-related concerns. This is because the pages have user-declared canonical tags, which Google recognizes, ensuring that these URLs are not indexed. We are following Google's recommended practices for handling duplicate URLs by using the rel="canonical" link annotations. This method is a strong signal to Google that the specified URL should be considered the canonical one. For more details on Google's recommendations, you can visit Google's guidelines on consolidating duplicate URLs.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems irrelevant due to being outdated or not applicable to your case, we recommend opening a new support ticket. We also highly suggest checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Pages that have parents, are being duplicated indefinitely. Example:
versteckter Link or versteckter Link

In this case, there should be only:
versteckter Link

The behavior is happening in all languages. With WPML deactivated, the duplicate URLs redirect to the main one. Example:

putting:
versteckter Link

redirects to:
versteckter Link

Hello,

I forwarded your ticket to our developers, so they can take a more in-depth look into your issue. I isolated the issue in the staging environment you sent me (with only WPML active). Please leave it as it is for a few days, so we can analyze the error isolated.

As soon as I receive feedback from them, I'll update you. Thank you for your patience.

Hello,

I got feedback from our developers. These pages are accessible, but should bring no issue to the functioning of your website. That is because the canonical URL will be the same, so pages can't be indexed and user/search engine cannot find them as those are not linked anywhere.

Make sure to have WPML SEO installed, and you shouldn't have any problems with those URLs.

Best regards,

Hey Lucas,

thanks for your reply! Though I get your point while your arguments regarding the canonical tags makes perfectly sense, I'm still not completely satisfied with this outcome:

First an foremost: This is (as you acknowledged) obviously a WPML bug. Even if that doesn't result in significant errors on our side, it should not happen in the first place.

Besides, your point regarding the indexation of those sites (unfortunately) is invalid: We have numerous reports in Google Search Console because there are to many URLs with duplicate content (which refer to those "infinity URLs" we are talking about) so there is clearly an impact on our SEO performance.

WPML SEO plugin is active btw and always has been since we are using WPML.

Is there any chance you can forward the ticket once again? As far as I'm concerned I still have no idea what's actually wrong with our setup or WPML.

Have a nice week!
Best regards,
Jan

Hello,

Could you please send us a screenshot or a more detailed description of the Google Search Console diagnostics? This way we can better understand what's the error that is being caused by WPML.

As for the issue, I'm still checking that with our devs. I'll get back to you as soon as I have a more concise answer from them.

Thank you,
Lucas Vidal.

Thank you for reporting the issue with URL generation in WPML. Our technical team has reviewed the details and confirmed that it is a bug.

We've added this issue to our bug list for future versions of WPML. However, we can't give a specific timeline for when it will be fixed as it is currently classified as a low priority.

We're now assessing how this issue might be affecting your site's SEO. Your input on any SEO challenges you're facing due to this would be helpful.

We appreciate your understanding and will keep you posted on any updates. Feel free to reach out if you have further concerns or need assistance.

Best,
Lucas Vidal

Hi Lucas,

sorry for the late reply! Regarding that whole SEO topic we are working with an agency (they also forwarded me the issue in the first place) so sometimes communications take some time 😉

Our agency partner was so kind to record a short clip of the issues he found in the Search Console, I really hope this helps: versteckter Link

And also nice to hear that the issue is going to be fixed, thanks a lot in advance for your efforts!

Please feel free to stay in touch if I can provide you with any further information.

Best regards,
Jan

Hey Jan,

I checked your video and even though the URL is reachable, the page is not being indexed by Google, which shouldn't cause any SEO related issues. Please check the attached screenshot I took from the video.

The inspection results say the page is not indexed because the user-declared canonical tag is found. There is no sitemap entry and no reference to the page.

Proper canonical URLs exist on all variations of URL and Google will not index them, neither can they be found by end-users without manually typing the URL.

Even if this seems to be duplicate content, WPML is already handling this with recommended practice from Google. See: versteckter Link

It recommends one of three methods:

1. Redirects: A strong signal that the target of the redirect should become canonical.
2. rel="canonical” link annotations: A strong signal that the specified URL should become canonical.
3. Sitemap inclusion: A weak signal that helps the URLs that are included in a sitemap become canonical.

We are using the 2nd option, which is a strong single as per Google guidelines.
