Resolved
Reported for: WPML Multilingual CMS 3.3.6
Resolved in: 4.2.5
Overview of the issue
The ‘Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.’ from Yoast SEO plugin does not work with WPML.

When you activate this option in Yoast SEO plugin (Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.), the categories in other language give 404 errors.
Workaround
Disable that option in Yoast SEO plugin and use this plugin instead https://wordpress.org/plugins/no-category-base-wpml/
The plugin you offer is not compatible with WPML anymore…. Please update this info.
Hi, sorry, but can you please elaborate some more? do you mean because of the ‘strip category’ issue, or any other issue you have between WPML and Yoast SEO ?
It seems that the no-category-base plugin no longer works after updating WPML to 3.5.3.1..?
Looking into that, I’ll update here.
Hi,
We have tested and could not see the issue on a clean install – can you please open a ticket in our support forum – https://wpml.org/forums/forum/english-support/ ?
Thanks!
Hi,
Thanks for your quick reply! For some reason I managed to resolve this by refreshing and clearing caches in multiple places – it suddenly started working again.
Sorry for the trouble.
No worries. happy it’s resolved!
Same issue here but can’t fix it
We are looking at it now.
Hi there,
We have tested again everything seems to be working as expected, with the default theme and also with some premium themes. Can you please make sure you are not affected by some caching happening ? If you still can not resolve please open a ticket in our support forums.
I was also struggling few hours (!) to make this work, it worked in default language but not in others. I fiddled with settings, saving permalinks, keeping or removing “category” slug in SEO Yoast, activating default theme, deactivating plugins, searching everything across web for solution…
Finally I got it working after installing this plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/no-category-base-wpml
Sorry for that but every plugin that messes up with the URL structure is very complex to handle. I am happy you found out the solution at the end.
The process you described above is not working. If you add ‘.’ to the category base it shows a 404 error. The only workaround is to manually redirect each one of them to category page.
What can we do if we don’t want to install the plugin?
Sorry about that. Can you please explain what do you mean add ‘.’ to the category base?
Thank you! It worked! 🙂
does not work.
Can you please open a ticket in our support forum? This was tested recently and we need to see why it’s not working for you.
Amit, there is for sure a problem – I have a support ticket opened on the WPML forum (https://wpml.org/forums/topic/category-redirect-broker-version-4-2/) and a problem with the latest version has also be reported by others on the wordpress forum (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/getting-404-with-sub-category/)
OK thanks, we are looking at it. I’ll keep you updated.
Hi Amit,
Thanks for looking into this – Is there any update on when a fix will be released?
We are working on this, I’ll update once there are any news.
We are working on this, I’ll update once there is any news.
Any updates on this issue ?
Yes! we already have a fix, we are testing it and it’ll be released with our next WPML version.
Hi Amit,
Is there a pre-release version we can download? I want to get this issue resolved ASAP.
Thanks,
Y
There’s still no beta I can share with you, once there is I will.
Please release the fix. I tried with earlier version and it was working fine. But when I am switching to new version the problem creeps up.
It’s showing lots of not found errors. And this is hurting our rankings
Please release
We are on it, there might be a beta for this one. I’ll update here tomorrow.
We have just released a beta version that resolves this issue, please if you can give it a try – important note! – it’s a beta so I do not recommend using it on production without running it first on a test server.
Thanks
It’s performing stable till now
great thanks for letting us know!
Hi Amit,
Thanks for the fix, it works on my site.
When will be release the production version 4.2.5?
David, that’s very good news! this fix is in testing and will be out in a few weeks
