Over the coming months, we plan to develop the ability to configure WCML settings based on the location of your customers. To be sure we are developing useful features, we need to hear from you!
Changing the currency configuration
The first step in this new location-based logic will be the ability to display specific currencies based on a customer’s country.
Until now, shop owners have been able to set which currencies are displayed in each language.
With the next WCML update, you will be able to display currencies according to a customer’s location instead. You will be able to do this in two ways:
Change your settings to show currencies based on a customer’s IP address or billing address, if logged in.
2. Continue to show currencies based on the customer’s language, but specify which currency to use as each language’s default based on a customer’s location.
We designed this new option to help shop managers who We designed these new options to help shop managers who would like to implement a pricing policy or enforce certain currencies for customers based on their location.
Enforce certain currencies for users based on their location or billing address.
Implement a pricing policy based on location.
For instance, you can decide to set a higher price for someone in the US (paying in USD) rather than for clients in the UK (paying in GBP). You can set it so that customers won’t see the prices in the other country’s currency, even though both customers speak English.
Future plans for country-based features
This is just the first step in being able to customize settings based on a customer’s location. We plan to develop additional features based on the feedback you provide.
Some potential features for development:
Shipment options based on country
Payment options based on country
Product prices based on country
We want to hear from you!
Do you plan to use this new functionality, or will you continue to operate your store based on language? Which upcoming features would be the most useful for your business, and how will you use them? Is there a country-based feature you need that we haven’t mentioned? Let us know in the comments.

Yes, we need this feature and were starting to look for a plugin with this functionality.
Glad to know we’ll be developing something useful for you, Gergi! Is there a specific use case you’re looking to solve with this functionality?
We want to localize our ecommerce platfrom for different countries – if you choose your location to be in Italy, then you see Italian and English as a fallback language. Look how Nike is doing it: https://www.nike.com/
Hi Gergi – Thanks for your feedback. We don’t currently have a way to do this based on location, we have a similar feature currently where you can automatically redirect a user based on their browser language. See this article about automatically redirecting based on browser language.
hi , generally the new Future is powerful and great , but in fact i don`t use the currency switcher in WPML that because ,
when i install WPML i talk a fast look about THE currency option and found that i have to update the rate by my self for all currency i use , may be later i need to check this option again , but the plugin i use now is update the currency rate automatically and that can save time ,
if auto-update is been there that will be more perfect
I can’t be helpful. I no longer use WooCommerce. Good job. Renato
Fantastic ! Glad to see more critical features coming in the next update.
Thanks
Yes, it would be great to have this feature.
Thank you!
Glad to hear it. Thanks for your feedback, Olga!
Awesome news on this. We have a number of eCommerce clients who needs this feature and definitely customers in the future. Good work WPML
Thank you, Jamie!
Hi,
Great news ! When do you think it will be available?
Thanks
Hi John – We hope to have the currency per country feature in the next WCML release. We are aiming for the end of this month.
Hi,
Yes, that would be great. Some of my clients was asking for this feature. It would be great to set language and currency based on customers location.
Thank you.
Regards,
Necdet Emre.
Great ! Looking forward for this new feature.
Your plans looks really helpful for our need.
Do you have some news about the this new feature? You talked about the end of June. It doesn’t seem to be available?
Hi Nicolas – we’re working on a release for a little bit later this month!
A great feature. I have been trying several plugins for this functionality but I can’t seem to fine one I really like, it would be great if it is builtin!
Thank you.
One thing that is REALLY important is to have an auto update for exchange rates.
Another thing that is causing me major issues is the currency support in PayPal, there needs to be an option to convert the currency to one that is supported by PayPal.
Thank you so much, I am looking forward to it.
Hi Hameed – Thanks for your comment. WCML currently supports automatic exchange rates. Check out our documentation about this here.
It also supports specifying a supported currency for each payment gateway through the currency settings. You can read more about that here.
Hopefully that answers your questions!
Really glad to hear this development, don’t use this plugin currently, but will be purchasing it and using it from now on 👌👍, Are we expecting the announcement soon?
Glad to hear it, Eddie. We’re working on a beta right now! Keep an eye on our blog for an announcement soon.
