Overview of the issue
If you are using WPML, you may experience significant slowness in the backend of your WordPress site. This issue is accompanied by a large number of duplicated queries, particularly related to icl_background_task
table.
Workaround
Please, make sure of having a full backup of your site before proceeding.
Then, access to your database and truncate the icl_background_task
table.

I’m having the same type of problems. Truncating the icl_background_task table helps for a while (it stops the processes that hang) but when an update is done, the same thing happens and tasks get stuck and build up again in this table.
Support mentioned you were working on a solution, when can I expect this to be resolved?!
So far, we don’t have an ETA but our developers are aware of this issue.

This issue should be fixed in WPML 4.7, which will be released soon. You can download the RC version here and test it on a staging site.
