[Resolved] Blog Posts in Link Format Not Working After Switching Translation
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: You are experiencing issues with PDF links on your News page not opening correctly in Spanish translations. While the links open correctly in English, they redirect to a blog page instead of opening the PDF in Spanish. Solution: To ensure that PDF links open correctly in all translations, follow these steps: 1. Navigate to WPML > Settings. 2. Ensure the "Show 'Multilingual Content Setup' meta box on post edit screen" option is checked. 3. Edit the page where the PDF links are set and scroll to the bottom. 4. Enable translation for the custom field "_nectar_link". 5. Use the Advanced Translation Editor to translate the link.
If this solution does not resolve your issue, or if it seems outdated or irrelevant to your specific case, we recommend opening a new support ticket. Additionally, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Background of the issue:
I am trying to open PDF links from the post links on our News page, regardless of translation. The page where the issue can be seen is hidden link. We have blog posts set to the Link Format to insert the corresponding PDF link to the post and publish it so that the PDF opens in a new tab from that post's link on the main News page.
Symptoms:
The links open correctly when in English, but when translated to Spanish, the link opens up the individual blog page, which we have no content for because it is supposed to be opening up the PDF link. I have tried several troubleshooting tips from Maiya and a previous disconnected human support agent with no solution so far.
Questions:
Why do the links open correctly in English but not in Spanish?
How can I ensure the PDF links open correctly in all translations?
Thanks for contacting us. It sounds like you'd need to translate the PDF links manually.
I will require temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to a test site where the problem has been replicated, if possible. This will enable me to provide better assistance and determine if any configurations need to be modified.
Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.
Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.
✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.
Thank you so much for your quick reply! Our client is approving budget internally for this now so we are waiting to hear back. Please keep this ticket open until we receive approval, and I will get you the login credentials you need asap.
Hello! Our client finally got back to us and approved more budget to get this done. We are looking to do this early next week, starting Tuesday after the client has made their weekly updates to the site, at which time I will sync the staging site up to its most current version and get you the access you need. I just wanted to ping this ticket and send an update!
Thank you! I think this solution will work great for when we do have Spanish PDFs that need to open in place of the English versions, but we do not have those at this time so we don't have translated URLs to add to the editor like in the example. However, your solution did help me figure out a workaround for now by choosing not to translate the _nectar_links, causing them to function as intended by opening the PDF no matter if you were in the English or Spanish version of the site. A few didn't work for whatever reason, but I set up redirects from the translated Spanish post URL to the PDF and got those working too. I think we are good to go for now, but I will reach back out of we have any issues! I really appreciate your help!
