This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client noticed that their blog posts in German include a '/de/' tag in the URL, while the English ones do not have an '/eng/' tag, and they are concerned this might confuse Google in understanding their website.

Solution:
We explained that it is normal not to have a slug for the default language in the URL. If the client prefers to include a slug for the default language, we provided a link to our documentation on how to set this up: Language setup for the default language.

We also reassured the client that search engines like Google use "hreflang" tags to understand the language of the content on each page, and these tags are present in the code of each page. For more information on hreflang tags, we provided a link: What is hreflang?.

If this solution doesn't look relevant, please open a new support ticket.

Tell us what you are trying to do? So I just realised that my Blog-post in German have a /de/ tag in the URL yet the english ones do not have an /eng/ tag in the URL. Could this not confuse Google undertsanding my website?

Example:

ENG --> hidden link
German --> hidden link

Is there any documentation that you are following?

Is there a similar example that we can see?

What is the link to your site? carlocao.com

Hi there.

That is normal - we don't add a slug for the default language.

You can do it if you want, as explained at the URL below but, for the default language, I think it looks better if that option is not used:
https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/directory-default-language/

In regards to Google or search engines, have no worries, there are "hreflang" tags in each language, inside the code of each page, that will tell browsers in what language the current content on the page is.

More info on hreflang tags:

I hope that you will find all this information helpful 🙂
