Background of the issue:
I am trying to translate a post using WPML as I have done normally for over a year. I have been translating posts all day and encountered an issue with the last one. I expected the translated post to appear correctly after using the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE).

Symptoms:
When clicking the Translation Icon in the WordPress editor, I am redirected to the Translations queue instead of the ATE. After translating and saving, the post status remains 'Needs Translation' and the 'Take and Translate' action is still available. The translation appears with the Cog symbol in the WordPress Editor, but re-saving does not resolve the issue.

Questions:
Why am I being redirected to the Translations queue instead of the ATE?
Why does the post status remain 'Needs Translation' after saving?
How can I resolve the issue of the translation not appearing?

Just to share an update:

The issue seems to be only with this URL:
hidden link

Although I was having similar issues with another Page, I managed to resolve it as per below (however, there is still an issue with the above URL)

1. If I click on the cross next to the Post name to "Add Translation to French" or any other selected language, instead of going straight to the ATE, I am being redirected to the Translations queue.

2. If I click Take and Translate, I go to the ATE, translate all segments as per usual, and click "Save & Complete". I then end up back at the Translations queue with the Status: Needs Translation and Actions: Take and Translate button.

3. I then went to Translation Management, clicked the checkbox next to One Day in Portovenere Itinerary: A Walking Tour. Then a button appears in the bottom right of the screen, "Translate Your Content"

4. I selected "Translate Myself" for each language and clicked Translate.

5. I then return to the Translations queue and select Translate for each language. It takes me to the ATE where everything was already translated from before.

Upon returning to WordPress Dashboard > All Posts and locating the post, all languages now appear with the Pencil symbol.

However, when viewing the post, the Language Switcher does not appear/drop down. Just like it wouldn't if the posts were not translated yet.

If I change the language (by first going Home, or any other page or post), I can then see the translated post in our Related Posts in the sidebar or in our Insider Guide, and both related Categories.

So the posts exist in a translated state and appear correctly translated.

BUT THEY DO NOT SEEM LINKED TO THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE POST.

If we return to WP Dash > All Posts and say, click on Edit the French Translation Pencil - it goes back to the Translation queue and the circle continues. Also, the Pencil turns to a Cog.

If I edit the original post, and save it, the Pencils remain (usually they would return to the 2 rotating semi-circle arrows).
I have tried cancelling the Posts in "Translation Jobs" - it also does not solve the issue.

I also edited some other posts today (after this issue) and have had no problems updating their translations.

I hope this may help.

Thank you 🙂

Thanks for contacting us. I will need to closely examine your website. Therefore, I will require temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to a test site where the problem has been replicated, if possible. This will enable me to provide better assistance and determine if any configurations need to be modified.

Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.

Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.

✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.

Thanks for your reply.

I ran the troubleshooting options listed below in WPML > Support > Troubleshooting link and it seems to fix the issue here hidden link . I'm able to switch languages now.

1. Clear the cache in WPML.
2. Remove ghost entries from the translation tables.
3. Fix element_type collation.
4. Fix WPML tables collation.
5. Set language information.
6. Fix terms count.
7. Fix post type assignment for translations.

Hi Kor

That seems to have worked, all translations now seem to update and process corrections in the ATE and reflect on the front end.

It did end up adding 8 foreign language posts to the English All Posts list.
They were all Unique Post IDs but replicated SLUGs and Post content etc so I simply deleted them.

How do I know or where can I get information as to how to choose which of these (or others in troubleshooting) to use if this happens in the future?
1. Clear the cache in WPML.
2. Remove ghost entries from the translation tables.
3. Fix element_type collation.
4. Fix WPML tables collation.
5. Set language information.
6. Fix terms count.
7. Fix post type assignment for translations.

Or is this just a Tech support question/issue?

Thanks for your reply. Each option on the troubleshooting page includes a brief explanation to help guide you. However, since you're unsure which one to use, please make sure to create a full backup of your site first. After that, you can safely run the listed options and they should help resolve the issue you're experiencing.

Hi Kor
If this still works,

I have this issue happening again, although this time, when I create an English post and then click on the cross to Translate it - i am again being taken to the Translations Queue.

I can "Take and Translate" it - "Save and Complete" it - it turns to a pencil if I go back to All Posts

However, if I click on the Pencil, I get stuck in the loop again.

I backed up the site.

Then I went to WPML > Support > Troubleshooting and did what you did last time.

1. Clear the cache in WPML.
2. Remove ghost entries from the translation tables.
3. Fix element_type collation.
4. Fix WPML tables collation.
5. Set language information.
6. Fix terms count.
7. Fix post type assignment for translations.

However, it did not work this time.

I there maybe another option that needs to be clicked?

Thanks for your reply. It seems to work fine when I deactivated the "Redis Object Cache" plugin. Could you retry now?

Hi Kor

Yes, you are right, it seems to be working now with Redis deactivated.
I have had Redis activated for over a month (maybe even 2 now) and have only noticed this issue for the first time last week and again yesterday....

Should WPML/Redis be compatible?
If so, are there some WPML or Redis settings that may need attention?

If not, are you aware of any other object caching products that are?

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. Yes, that plugin is compatible. Maybe you can try clearing the cache and reactivating it? Then, retry the translation again. https://wpml.org/documentation/support/using-wpml-with-redis-caching/

Before i recontacted you about this, i actually did do that.

After I went through the 7 troubleshooting buttons that you suggested last time I cleared:
Cloudflare
WP Rocket
The Redis Object Cache
Browser and DNS caches

And the issue still persisted.

I will try clearing the Object cache again and reactivate it.

I can't do it right now so will test tomorrow and get back to you.

Thanks again

Hi Kor

I cleared the cache and then reactivated Redis - I was then able to translate Posts and listings i had created in the TAE as per normal.

Worked as it should.

I then created another post, as soon as i tried to translate it - i was taken to the Translation Queue.

I flushed the Redis cache (and left Redis activated), and it appears that all is working again.

So it seems that if I create a new post, there is a problem occurring with the object caching AND WPML. It's fine to flush the cache to get everything working, but it kind of defeats the purpose of the object cache.

Do you know if there are any other reports of this currently happening? I know I updated both Redis and WPML SEO recently (and there is the new WPML update ready to go), but I am not sure when the issue first arose in relation to the updates.

Thanks for your reply. This could be caused by another third-party cache plugin on your website. Could you try deactivating those and leave only WPML and Redis Object Cache active to see if it works? Then, reactivate each plugin one by one to identify which one is causing the issue.
