This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client wants to change the original translation language from Dutch to English and is having trouble seeing the English text when translating to Polish, even after changing the primary language of the site.
Solution:
If you're experiencing issues with changing the original language for translation, we recommend the following steps:
1. Instead of using the 'Automatic Translation' feature in WPML > Translation Management, choose the 'Translate myself' option.
2. Then, navigate to WPML > Translations and select 'Translate' for the content you wish to work on.
3. If you're not translating in bulk and can manage content one by one, this method will allow you to translate from the new source language.
4. For bulk translation, please note that our team is currently working on this feature, and we do not have a specific timeline for its release.
5. As a workaround, you can create content in the desired source language by switching to that language in the backend before creating new content. This will set the new content's source language accordingly.

We also provided a detailed example using a test site where the default language was changed, and content was created in the new source language to facilitate translation.

If this solution doesn't look relevant to your situation, please open a new support ticket with us, and we'll be happy to assist you further.

I want to change the original translation language from Dutch to English. I already changed the primary language of the site but this didn't help.
I want to see the English text when I am translating to Polish.
Thank you for your help!

Hi there.

Please take a look at the recommendation in this existing ticket here:
https://wpml.org/forums/topic/use-different-language-to-auto-translate/

I think that should properly guide you to accomplish what you want.

Hello
This doesn't solve my problem. I don't have a problem with the url's. The home-page is dereiger.pl and this is in English. But when I want to translate this page, the original language is still Dutch. We want to translate from English to Polish so the original language should become English.

Thank you for your response!

Virginie

Hi Virginie.

Please accept my apologies. I definitely understood your request from the very beginning but the tool I am using for our documentation and existing ticket URLs somehow took the wrong URL instead of the one that I wanted to share with you.

I replaced the URL above.

Please check it once again now.

Thank you for your understanding and sorry once again.

Hi there.

Sorry, it seems that the user has set their ticket as private.

I was not aware of that.

One of the tickets I worked on related to this exact same topic was this:
https://wpml.org/forums/topic/how-can-i-use-automatic-translation-from-other-languages/

But that option would work only when the source language of the content is the default language.

You can definitely accomplish what you want for your situation, too, if, instead of sending to automatic translation from WPML > Translation Management, you select the option called "Translate myself" > and then you go to WPML > Translations > and select "Translate".

If you don't need to do this in bulk and you can do this one by one, for now, then that's possible.

In regards to doing this in bulk, at the moment I know that our team is still working on that feature, and, as much as I would love to share with you a time estimate of when that feature will be delivered, I can't because we, supporters, don't have access to that kind of information and there are a lot of fixes that are worked on daily by our developers, taking into consideration how big is our database of customers and plugins that support WPML.

All the issues and feature requests are split into priority levels, and they are handled and launched based on that.

I am also sharing some screenshots below so that you can see an example from a test site where I tested what I shared with you above.

On this test website, my default language was English. What I did though, is that I switched to Italian from the top bar in the backend of the site, then I went to Pages, and I created a new page straight from the Italian backend so that the Italian language will be the source language of that page (if I would have created that page from under the English backend, the source language would have been set to English).

Then, I went to WPML > Translation Management > I made sure that, at the top in the bar, I was on the Italian backend > then I selected the page that I created straight from the Italian backend > I selected the "Translate myself" option > I sent it to the translation queue > and then I went to WPML > Translations > I clicked on the "Translate" button for the Italian to Romanian translation > and, as long as you have available automatic translation credits, you can use the button at the top (you will see a button instead of the warning that you see in my screenshot) > and you can use that option to translate your content.

I hope that you will find all this information that I shared with you helpful 🙂

Please let me know how things go.

Mihai
